US Census Volunteers Needed!
My name is Lisa Mazat, and I am the Recruiting Assistant for the US Census assigned to Coronado and Silver Strand. We currently do not have enough applicants in Coronado and Silver Strand to ensure that we will have enough workers for an accurate count. The Census provides more than a snapshot of a community’s demographics. The Census count determines the allocation of nearly $800 billion among 130+ different programs. Those programs provide funding for schools (Title 1 (Silver Strand Elementary), special education, Head Start, school lunches), medical, roads, SNAP, housing, social block grants, and so much more! It takes a community to get an accurate count, and the Census need Coronado USD’s help!
******************************************************************************************
Census Takers are needed to make sure that all of our kids and people here on the Island and the Strand are counted so that we can maximize the money our local schools receive. The Census hires people from OUR neighborhoods to be Census Takers in OUR neighborhoods! Coronado and the Strand are divided into about 10 tracts by the Census. The goal of the Census is to adequately staff each tract so that census workers do not need to travel far to talk with their own neighbors — who knows your neighbors better than you? In the 2010 Census, Census Takers were responsible for returning 40% of our census numbers. They are very important jobs!
Benefits include great pay ($21 per hour), flexible hours (part/full time and day/weekends/evenings), weekly pay and paid training! This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity! Basic qualifications: 18 years or older (including students!!); must have a valid email address; U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.

I can use your help! Can you please help with the following?
A) Sending our info and flyers in e-blasts to your schools’ families? We have had great success with this in the San Diego Unified schools!
B) Posting our flyers in your office for staff members? Before this job, I was a high school math teacher. As much as teachers are told not to spend their own money on their classrooms, we do! This job can be worked around school hours!
C) Inviting the census to set up a booth at any school events that you can have that would be appropriate where we can engage with local families?
D) Allowing us to have a recruiting event with the high school seniors on campus? I would love to schedule a couple of times where a co-worker and I could be available to sign-up Coronado high school seniors who might be interested in the job. I know this job pays more than my 18 year old daughter’s summer job at Forever 21. It actually helps the community too! In San Diego, I would set up a table during lunch and an advisory time for students to ask questions and apply.
E) Help us identifying families that could benefit from this job and passing our information on them?
I look forward to hearing from you soon. I can be reached by phone (619.395.4495) or email (Lisa.M.Mazat@2020census.gov).
Thank you,
Lisa Mazat
