FCS: Road To Be CTE 2019
If you are looking for some great professional development this summer, you want to come to the shared conference between FCCLA and NYSAFCSE at SUNY Oneonta on July 23-24, 2019. This is a PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT conference (NYSAFCSE’s state conference) that is open and available to ALL FCS professionals. Even though NYSAFCSE is sharing the campus with FCCLA, it doesn’t mean that you need to have an FCCLA chapter to attend. The purpose of this conference is to provide FCS teachers with quality professional development and updates relating to FCS and CTE.
Over the years, our conferences have changed. For those of you that remember, we were once part of a Unified Conference (AAFCS, NYSAFCSE and Cornell Cooperative Extension). However, Cooperative Extension numbers declined during this time and they decided to drop out of the Unified Conference. The last Unified conference between AAFCS and NYSAFCSE was in 2014 held in Albany. In 2015, NYSAFCSE decided to become part of the CTE conference committee and joined the NYSACTE Joint CTE conference in 2016 and again in 2018. For the 2018 Joint CTE Conference, we invited AAFCS to join NYSACTE in Syracuse and a few of them did.
In 2017, the NYSAFCSE Board decided to support our Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO) FCCLA by sharing facilities at SUNY Oneonta. Our main focus of the conference was to see if we could work with FCCLA and share in their sessions. As much as we tried to make our schedules meld, we could not make it work. The 2017 FCS: Boot Camp offered Professional Development sessions in the Human Ecology building, Physical Science building, Morris Hall and on-campus housing in Higgins Hall. We did however work together on a community service project to sew washcloth travel kits (including toothbrushes, soap, shampoo) that were donated to a local Hospice.
This leads us to July 2019. With all the new changes in the Middle Level Curriculum and CTE Pathways to Graduation, we are offering professional development at this year’s state summer Professional Development Conference, FCS: Road To Be CTE - #FCSRoad2BCTE. The committee (Teresa Steflik, Dove Karn, Rosemarie Avanzato, Shawna Strenfel, Marie Elliott and Kimberly DeHart) are working hard to bring you quality Professional Development opportunities. Currently, we have presentations in Middle Level Curriculum Development, Project Based Learning (PBL’s), Food Science, Sewing, Business Etiquette, Juice Plus & Tower Gardening, Environmental Design, STEAM in the classroom, Technology in the Classroom, Communications, Google Sites, Working with students with disabilities, Nutrition and Wellness, Oneonta updates,Say YES to FCS, and more.
FCCLA will be on campus with us at their Leadership Conference and we encourage you to check them out to see what great things they are participating in. You will have opportunities to work with FCCLA students on a shared Community Connections project. Should you have any questions, you can contact Teresa or Kim at nysafcseconf@gmail.com.
