Advice: Protect Yourself
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, with over one million people diagnosed each year. Even though it is so common, you may not know how it can affect your life and what you can do to reduce your risks.
Unprotected exposure to the sun's UV rays is the culprit of most cases of skin cancer.
Genetics also can play a role in skin cancer development.
May is National Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness Month, so be aware and stay protected!
1) Use Sunscreen
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher as part of a complete sun protection program.
2) Stay in the Shade
Staying in the shade will keep you cooler and reduce your risk of skin cancer. During the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their brightest and can cause the most damage to your skin, you should still wear sunscreen.
3) Keep Children Safe
Most cases of skin cancer are linked to sever sunburns and sun exposure during childhood. Newborns should be kept out of the sun completely, and sunscreen should be used on babies and children over the age of six months.
4) Get a Skin Cancer Check-up
You should make it a point to examine your skin every month for any abnormalities (new spots, changes in existing ones (especially in the size or color).
5) Cover Up With Protective Clothing
Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
Product peek: Body Sunscreen SPF 30
Wear sunscreen every day (rain or shine) to keep your skin healthy, whether you are going for a walk or run, headed to the ballpark or outdoor concert, having a picnic or sunbathing at the beach. The sun can even harm you through your car windows, so always cover exposed skin with a high-quality SPF lotion, like Rodan+Fields' Essentials Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body Sunscreen.
This lightweight, non-greasy lotion is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes and does more than just defend against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Antioxidant vitamins C and E absorb damaging free radicals while dimethicone helps maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and anti-inflammatory ingredients protect against environmental stress. Safe for the whole family. $23 for 5 fl. oz.
