NOVEMBER 16, 2022 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
The snow arrived this week and reminded me of how beautiful winter in Minnesota can be. I was also reminded how it can impact the daily commute and our roadways. To that end, I ask for your partnership in reminding any student who drives to school to allow enough time to ensure they are arriving before the start of their first class. Your support is critical.
The arrival of snow also reminds me that as parents and educators we begin to think about weather related school closures. Please take some time to review the snow day reminders in today’s newsletter. We want everyone to aware of our weather-related school closing practices as we head in to the winter season.
With the Thanksgiving Holiday and the end of the Trimester 1 rapidly approaching, here are some important dates for your family calendars:
- Nov. 24-25—No School. Remember it is a short school week next week with the Thanksgiving holiday. There is no school on Thursday or Friday.
- Dec. 1—End of Trimester 1: Please help your student get to school each day, on time and ready to learn. This year has started so well, let’s keep the momentum going and end the trimester strong!
- Dec. 2 & 5—No School for Students: These are professional learning and work days for staff.
- Dec. 10—Winter Market (formerly Holiday House): This is a fun winter community building event open to all. Check out details in the newsletter.
Finally, our winter activities and athletic season is starting up. Our athletes, mathletes, robotics team and many more student activities and clubs are launching their winter season. I want to encourage all students to consider signing up for an activity or club if they are not already doing something this winter.
The research is clear, student engagement in co-curricular activities improves the student experience and learning in high school. While we have 80 percent of our students involved in athletics, activities, and clubs throughout the year, I want to push for even higher levels of engagement during the winter when the weather can drive us indoors and away from others.
Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support and partnership. One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud.

Principal
Snow days: Important reminders
The snowfall this week announced the arrival of wintery weather. It’s been a while since we have had a weather-related school cancellation. It’s a good time for a few reminders:
- Spring Lake Park Schools makes every possible effort to keep schools open, in most weather conditions, if bus travel is safe. Unless we announce otherwise, assume school is in session. We will not send a "Yes, we are open for school" message. School is in session until you hear or see differently from Spring Lake Park Schools.
- Spring Lake Park Schools will communicate any school closures due to weather directly to families and high school students as quickly as possible after the decision is made. Communication is sent via email, text and voicemail based on parent/guardian preferences. To update your contact information, including phone numbers or email addresses, please log in to Campus Parent portal. You may also contact the main office of your child’s school. Emergency alerts are also posted on our website as an emergency alert popup AND shared with local news outlets.
- If school is cancelled for the day, there will be no instruction for the day unless a flexible learning day is communicated. Flexible learning days will only be considered if we have multiple weather-related closures this winter.
The decision to close schools is a difficult one and one we know greatly impacts families. To find more information about how we make weather-related decisions and to see answers to frequently asked questions, visit the School Closings and Alerts page.
Counseling connections
A school counselor’s day is never dull. A typical day includes everything from managing student schedules and changes to supporting emerging student emotional needs to hall and lunch supervision to proactive, planned meetings with students and parents.
That last part – the proactive, planned annual meetings with students and parents – is somewhat unusual among public schools. Spring Lake Park Schools students in grades 7-12 can expect to meet with their counselor - who is a counselor for personalized learning – at least once each year just to focus on a student’s future plans. Parents are invited.
Whether your child in the first years of their school experience or well into middle or high school, we want families to know what they can expect counseling connections at Spring Lake Park Schools. Read the full story online.
Come Tour and Talk
One of the best ways to get to know Spring Lake Park Schools is to come visit. Tour and Talk events are happening in November at our elementary schools for families looking at preschool and kindergarten. Events also kick off at Spring Lake Park High School to provide an opportunity for families to get inside our buildings and meet some of our staff.
During 45-minute tours, prospective students and families will learn more about our schools, our personalized approach to learning, the path toward career, college and life readiness and the many opportunities available at Spring Lake Park Schools. Find more information and sign up.
College Fair Day!
On Monday, Spring Lake Park High School students had the chance to visit 60+ booths right in the Panther Gym and consider their post-secondary options!
SLPHS Band and Choir tour
Spring Lake Park Band and Choir students returned on Sunday night from their four-day tour to Chicago. They stopped at Germantown High School, had a music exchange and met other music-lovers their age. They received a clinic from DePaul University’s band director Erica Neidlinger and the former Wheaton College choir director, Mary Hopper. They played a public performance at the Field Museum.
Students spent time at the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, Shed Aquarium, Millennium Park, Navy Pier and some even went on the TILT at the top of the Hancock building. They saw Wicked at and a show at Medieval Times.
Here are some quotes from our students:
The bonding moments between band and choir students brought us even closer together as musicians.
- 12th grade band member
I enjoyed doing things I normally wouldn’t do and stepping out of my comfort zone with new people.
- 11th grade choir member
The choir/band trip was an amazing experience for me. I was able to make great memories, experience new experiences and create new friends along the way.
- 10th grade choir member
