Elmwood News (9/3/18)
Week of September 3-7
Message from Principal Polomsky
Elmwood Parents & Community~
It was so wonderful to see everyone last night at Parent Orientation. Thank you for spending the evening with us, to learn about all of the things your child will be doing this year in their classroom. We are happy to partner with you in your child’s education.
This past week, Mrs. Cain and I have been visiting every classroom for a class read-aloud. We are reading the book Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller, to spread the message that even one small kind gesture can have a big impact on others. Our theme at Elmwood this year is “We Make a Difference” and we are using this book to teach students that showing kindness is one way that they can help make a difference in our community. We encourage you to speak with your children about the many ways they can show kindness at school, at home, and around town!
Enjoy the long weekend as a family!
Lisa Polomsky

Watch D.O.G.S.
Attention All ‘DADS’ of Elmwood Students:
We are excited for another great year of Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads/Father Figures of Great Students) at Elmwood. A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Polomksy and the entire staff for accommodating such a wonderful program at Elmwood. They work extremely hard to make this program successful!
Watch D.O.G.S. is an innovative program being used by schools across America. Watch D.O.G.S allows schools to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of dads/father-figures in their student’s lives. Our goal is to have dads/father-figures spend one day (7:45 am – 1:00 pm) this year at school to serve as positive role models, provide an extra set of eyes/ears, assist in classrooms (including their own student(s)) and assist during lunch/recess. To learn more about the program click here.
Watch D.O.G.S. sign-up will occur via SignUpGenius. The link will be distributed on Friday, September 14 in Elmwood’s Talk203 and will open at 6:00 pm CST. Sign-up is on a first-come first-serve basis. We do not have extra dates available. We will offer a full-day (7:45 am- 1:00 pm) and a “Lunch/Recess” fun option (11:15 am -12:45 pm). We added the Lunch/Recess fun option to allow more dads/father-figures to participate in the program. You may only sign up for ONE day. If you select a full-day, you cannot also select a Lunch/Recess day and vice versa.
If you are a 5th grade parent and have NOT participated in Watch D.O.G.S. please email Megan Warty at meganwarty@gmail.com with your name, child’s name and teacher prior to 9/14.
The school has a limited number of t-shirts available for volunteers, but to purchase your own shirt and/or a shirt for your child, click here.
WATCH D.O.G.S.
Back to School Carnival
If you plan to attend our Back to School Carnival (formerly Spirit Bash) with your family, please volunteer for a one hour time slot running a game or selling tickets/refreshments.
This is one of our biggest events of the year and it’s all about the kids! If everyone helps for an hour, we can all have the rest of the evening to spend with our families. Have teenagers? They’re welcome to help too! Sign Up HERE
Pets:
For the safety, comfort and consideration of others, please do NOT walk your dog on school property. If you wish to take your dog for a walk, please make arrangements to meet your child at the edge of the school property. Some children are terrified of pets; others are highly allergic. Some dogs, which are normally good with children, get excited and confused with so many strangers and may nip at the many hands petting them. We do not want anyone harmed.
Lost and Found:
All items that come to school should be clearly labeled with your child’s first and last name- backpacks, water bottles, sweat shirts, etc. This will help us identify lost items so they can be returned to your child. Items that aren’t labeled will be put in our lost and found cubbies, which are located across from the main office. Students are welcome to visit the lost and found, with permission from their classroom teacher, during the school day.
Girl Scouts (Grades K-5):
Are you interested in joining Girl Scouts or just getting more information before you join? Please complete the interest form, and an Elmwood Girl Scout Coordinator will contact you. https://goo.gl/forms/lukLRaeKq6fSQjrD3
