What is the "Netflix Effect" and how is it hurting our children?
Now, dinner is cold and your nerves are frayed. Why are there so many choices? After 30 minutes, we finally settle on a movie, which your family has already seen no less than one hundred times. Does this sound familiar? This is called the "Netflix Effect" or what is also known as "choice paralysis". It is damaging our children's ability to make decisions, but there is hope. We can change that. Yes. But, how?!?!?
Limit their choices. Do not even show them all of the options to begin with. Too many options are overwhelming. Requiring your child to commit to their decisions helps build the skills to make good choices.
Play games that involve strategy (think checkers, chess, connect four, tic-tac-toe). These types of games help children think about how a small decision now will have a substantial impact later.
Model! When making a decision, think it through out loud. This will allow your child to hear your thought process.
