Knorr receives Brodniak Award for Cultural Arts Ed
Mentor, supporter, leader, and friend. These are a few of the words that colleagues have used to describe Bob Knorr, this year’s recipient of the Walter A. Brodniak Award for Cultural Arts Education. Knorr was recognized for championing the arts for all kids in his 40-plus year career with the Anacortes School District.
“Bob introduced his students to numerous genres of music,” said Tina Franulovich-Martin, elementary music teacher. “He always went that extra mile for his students.”
Knorr has served as choir director, librarian, Mt Erie principal, and high school construction logistics coordinator. Knorr is an ardent supporter of Anacortes music programs and can be found at concerts throughout the district, supporting both students and staff.
The Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award was created in 1977, upon Mr. Brodniak's retirement as Superintendent of the Anacortes School District, "to foster growth of the cultural arts in the District." The award is given each spring to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or community organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District during the current school year.
“Bob truly stands out for his support of the performing arts in Anacortes,” said superintendent Mark Wenzel. “Even in retirement, his commitment has been amazing. He understands that the arts are a critical component of education, and helps our students and staff achieve excellence.”

Board moves toward final adoption of equity policy
The Anacortes School Board moved one step closer to formally adopting a district-wide equity policy during its meeting on May 21. The district’s new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy states that all adults in the school district are committed to affirming the abilities of all students, equitably distributing resources, and recognizing and respecting racial, cultural, and identity differences among students.
“The adoption of this policy reflects more than two years of work on behalf of the board, district staff, and the community,” said Superintendent Mark Wenzel. “I believe that the broader community will see much of their feedback reflected in this new policy.”
The district held several community forums, sent out surveys to families, staff and students, read research, and held staff training sessions related to equity as part of the work.
“I’m proud of the district for tackling a tough topic,” said board member Jennie Beltramini. “It is key for us to understand our own implicit biases, learn how to correct those, and how those biases impact our students.”
With an equity policy in place, the district will next work on developing procedures to help reduce some of the barriers that students and families face, such as access to technology, sports and activities, and early learning opportunities.
Incoming Superintendent Justin Irish brings a strong equity background to the district, including leading the development of a similar policy in the Edmonds School District.
“I’m excited to continue the strong work the district has already accomplished with its equity goals,” said Dr. Irish. “I look forward to working with our team to develop procedures that make real and lasting impacts for all our students.”
The board will complete its final adoption of the equity policy at its June 11 business meeting.
