Principal's Report
It's hard to believe that the 100th day of school is next Wednesday, that our second quarter report cards will come home Friday, or that we are entering the second half of our 2019-2020 school year! We have had an amazing first part of the year and look forward to all that is to come.
Mid-Year Reminders (Parent/Student Handbook)
Attendance Rules: below is a detailed reminder of our attendance policy and ways to communicate absences
Articles Prohibited at School: Students are in school to study and learn; therefore, no toys are allowed at school unless the teacher specifies a purpose. In addition and in order to protect school equipment and property, chewing gum is not permitted during the school day.
Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Devices, including SmartWatches: Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are not needed during the school day. Students have ample access on campus to technology tools and devices for research and reference. Should a student need to contact a parent or family member during the school day, teachers or office staff can assist them.
Health and Safety: The health room is staffed with a registered nurse. The teacher will send any child who is not feeling well or has been hurt to the health room; however, teachers will be careful to monitor the severity of the child's complaint. Headache, stomachache, or general malaise may not necessarily merit a referral to the healthroom. Students will be sent back to class if they do not have a fever. Parents are always contacted if the child has a fever of 100 degrees or more. Every effort should be made to keep sick children at home. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school after an illness.
Early Dismissals: If a parent must pick up a child from school early, that parent must send a note to the teacher in the morning stating the reason and time for the early dismissal. All notes must state the student's first and last name, teacher's name, and if the student will be returning the same day. Please report to the office before 2:00 PM to sign out your child. Only individuals listed on the student information card will be allowed to pick up that child.
For children,

From the Attendance Office
This time of year brings increased absences due to illness. The flu was prevalent at Oakview the couple of weeks leading up to the December holiday break. If your child was out and you have not sent in a note, please send in as soon as possible.
Below is from GCSD on turning in documentation for when your student is out ill.
Any student who misses school must present a written excuse, signed by his or her parent or legal guardian or a health care professional, for all absences within two (2) days of the student's return to school. The written excuse should include the reason for and the date of the absence. If a student fails to bring a valid written excuse to school, his or her absence will be recorded as unlawful.
If you take your child to the doctor, please ask for a medical note to turn into school. A medical note is especially beneficial when your child has missed consecutive days due to illness.
For your convenience, you can email the excuse directly to the attendance clerk at lswhite@greenville.k12.sc.us or fax it to 355-7115. You may also turn in excuses via our online portal, located on our school website (Student Absence Form).
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact the attendance office at 355-7102. You can also review attendance guidelines for GCSD (Attendance Rules).

School of Excellence Program: Speaking Up for Every Child
All children need an advocate – someone to speak out and stand up for them. The National Standards for Family-School Partnerships recognizes two goals for the standard of speaking up for every child. The first goal is understanding how the school system works. Oakview wants to empower all student advocates with the knowledge of how their school operates. In February, we will begin work on a video focused on increasing the understanding of how Oakview operates. You can help us by communicating what information you wish to see covered in this video coming to a screen near you in April.
* What questions do you have that you have never asked?
* Are you confused about Oakview policies or procedures?
* Do you know who to contact about what?
Your input is critical. Click Below to Provide Input.

The second goal for this standard is empowering families to support their own and other children’s success in school. To address this goal, we will be hosting a meeting in April to discuss how to press for success and how to increase your power to have a positive effect on your children’s future. Look for more details in April on this interactive, informative meeting.
By increasing our understanding of how our school system works and by learning the most effective and constructive methods to press for success, we will promote parent empowerment and increase our ability to advocate for our children.
Caring for your Chromebook--Mid-Year Reminders!
General Care
- Do NOT have any food or drinks near the Chromebook. Keyboards and hinges are being damaged due to crumbs and dirt getting underneath.
- Chromebooks do NOT like when you touch their screen. This includes your finger, a pen, pencil, or any other item.
- Chromebooks do NOT like excessive heat or cold. They should not be exposed to over 100 degrees or under 32 degrees. Make sure to take your Chromebook inside.
- Do NOT place your Chromebook on uneven surfaces where they might be subject to an accidental fall.
- Never move a Chromebook by lifting from the screen.
Screen Care
- The Chromebook screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
- Do not lean or put pressure on top of the Chromebook when it is closed.
- Do not poke the screen with anything that will mark or scratch the surface.
- Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (pens, pencils, etc.)
Keeping your Chromebook Clean
- Use a slightly moistened microfiber cloth to clean the keyboard and cover.
- To disinfect, you may use a disinfectant wipe, such as a Sani-wipe or Clorox with NO bleach. Do not use a wipe on the screen.
- You may use a screen cleaner for electronics to clean the screen.
