6th Grade Language Arts Class Newsletter
Welcome to My class!
A little about myself: This is my 7th year teaching. All 7 years I have taught Language Arts. I have taught 6-8th grade but am certified to teach 4-8th grade. I have been at Hernandez for four years, all of which I taught 6th grade Language Arts. I come from a large family of 9 brothers and sisters total. I have one son who is 7 years old named Jordan, and I will be getting married in March! YEA! I LOVE TO READ! Most of the time you will catch me reading a book on my cell phone or kindle if I have any free time at all. I love hands on activities and I think technology makes everything better. You will probably see this evident in my lessons and interactions with you.
Lastly, I just want to send a HUGE shout out to Mr. Fiske! We really appreciate all the hard work he did to keep our students on track so that they would not be too far behind during this transition.

Pens, Pencils, Sharpeners, OH MY!
Another major item that you need to be sure your student has is a planner. Planners are a great way to help students stay organized and keep up with all assignments, learning objectives, and deadlines throughout the day. A planner was issued to each student at the beginning of the year, free of charge. However, many students have lost or misplaced it. If your student has lost or misplaced their Planner they can purchase another one from the front office for $5. However, they DO NOT have to use the one that was provided by the school. If you want to purchase a different/new one you are welcome ot do this. I have seen them as cheap as $1 at the dollar store! It is an expectation that students are copying the agenda in their planner in ALL classes throughout the day.
Composition Notebooks Needed!
Unit 4- Persuasive Research
Through this unit we will be exploring what makes us who we are as well as discussing if our past and history determines our future achievements.
It is my suggestion that your student has their own copy of the novel. This can be purchased at any major book store, however, you can probably get it at Half Price books for under $5! THIS IS NOT REQUIRED, however it will make it easier for your child to complete assignments at home as well as to continue reading in their leisure time. We will also have copies of the book available in the library so that the kids can check them out there. This is first come, first serve. So I can not guarantee there will be enough copies for 300 students to check out. Ms. Smith and I will also have a class set for use in the classroom.
Please refer to my teacher website for further information, copies of handouts, or resources on this unit!
Remind101
With the ever increasing technology standards and the availability of cool new technology, I have something great to share with you! It is completely optional but I think you will find it worth it.
The program is called Remind101. It is a program set up for teachers to remind students (and parents) about homework assignments or projects, or even things that are going on around campus. The service is free, depending on your cellular service text messaging rates (meaning standard text messaging rates apply). It will strictly be used for my classroom only.
All you have to do is send a text message to (309) 606-4460, with the appropriate class period’s code (listed below). Then, throughout the rest of the year, I will be sending reminders to make sure your students are staying on top of school work in my class.
I know some of you may worry about security! I will never see your student’s phone numbers or yours if you choose to participate, nor will anyone else who signs up. The website to answer any questions you may have is: https://www.remind101.com/faq or please don’t hesitate to email or call me and the contact information listed below.
Lastly, I will be offering extra credit points for any student and/or parent who signs up! What a quick and easy way to boost your grades! Class codes are as follows:
1st period: @Lacey1st
3rd Period: @Lacey3rd
5th Period: @Lacey5th
7th Period: @Lacey7th
8th Period: @Lacey8th
