Cougar Connect (Boletín)
Week of February 22, 2021 (Semana del 22 de febrero de 2021)
End of the Trimester, Conferences, and Report Cards (Fin del trimestre, conferencias y boletas de calificaciones)
The end of the second trimester is Wednesday, March 10, so we are less than three weeks away. Students need to make sure to get all of their work in. Due to the tight turnaround time to get grades ready for conferences, most teachers will only be accepting assignments and late work until Friday, March 5.
Conferences will take place the week of March 15 from 2:00-3:10 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. As there aren’t as many conference spots in the spring as in the fall, the priority will go to students with D’s and F’s. Teachers will send out the signup to those families first and then we will open up remaining spots for additional families who need/want a conference.
Report cards will be sent out the week of March 15 by mail. Included with the report cards will be the iReady reports.

ELPAC Testing (Examen ELPAC)
For students who haven’t been reclassified as English proficient, they will be taking the bulk of the ELPAC test in March, beginning the week of March 1. Each week during Homeroom, students will focus on a different part of the test: reading, writing, and listening. We are doing a piece of the test each week like we normally do to make it more manageable for the students.
The speaking piece of the test is being administered by a district ELPAC tester. This already began starting before break and will continue until we get through all students. This could take place into April since only one student can be tested at a time and it takes approximately thirty minutes per student.
Returning To School (Regreso a clases)
As shared at the Board meeting on Wednesday, February 10, more teachers are expressing interest in returning in-person especially once vaccinated. The John Gardner Center at Stanford is working with RCSD to gather information from RCTA regarding returning in-person this spring and in the fall. This will help with the next steps in regards to planning, staffing, and communication. The encouraging news is that San Mateo County will be prioritizing educational staff starting this week, and some RCSD staff were able to get their first vaccine at the Oakland Coliseum during break.
In the event that we are able to come back this year, I have been working on how and where Band would happen outside and looking into the research, rules, and regulations around cohorting since our students aren’t cohorted/grouped during the day due to all of the different programs we offer. This will also be important for August when we do plan to return in-person and hope to return to our regular schedule.
In the meantime, we will remain in distance learning. We currently have around 90 students on campus doing distance learning via hubs and pods utilizing a combination of Kennedy teachers, guest teachers, and the REACH program. We are hoping to add a couple more pods/hubs as soon as we can. We have been searching for a couple of weeks to hire guest teachers and REACH leaders. We will also add additional pods if more Kennedy teachers want to do distance learning from their room with students present.

We have begun our annual Popcornopolis fundraiser to help benefit the music program at Kennedy Middle School! Last year our goal was to raise $10,000 for the program, and our wonderful community and students went above and beyond, raising over $12,000 profit! These funds are EXTREMELY important towards the growth and support of the music department. All funds go directly back to the students! With these funds we buy new instruments, equipment, music, supplies, and pay for transportation and trips! We will also use some of the proceeds this year to support our musical theater program.
This year has been especially challenging for the music department because we have not had our typical events to help raise money for the program. We have had to purchase more materials and software for our students who have been working hard in the virtual classroom!
Please consider purchasing some delicious popcorn from Popcornopolis to help raise money for our program! You can also share the link with family and friends or post to your social media! The popcorn ships DIRECTLY to your house, AND 50% of the proceeds go directly to our wonderful students! Click the link below to shop now:
Kennedy Middle School Music - Popcorn Fundraiser

Entrada gratis. Habrá interpretación al español.
Esta presentación está patrocinada por M-A PTA, Sequoia Union High School District, Sequoia Healthcare District, Peninsula Health Care District, y The Parent Venture.
