PBIS News 1/17/2020
Happy New Year and a happy new decade to you!! We are excited to be back at Fleming starting a new year and continuing to do our best with the Fleming fundamentals!
Our theme for January and February is “Rocket Boost Your Way into a Healthy New Year!” What we choose to eat and what we choose to do impacts our lives here and at home in so many ways. Our challenge for this month is to complete a weekly goal with our classmates. Last week we moved our bodies to “Go Noodles” to keep our energy flowing! We enjoyed singing, dancing, jumping and stretching daily. Staff were encouraged to stop in the gym to do some Galactic bowling - some spectacular feats were accomplished! This week we slowed down with some mindfulness moments taking time to breathe and relax.
At our monthly PBIS assembly we were treated to an amazing rap written and performed by our very own Mr. Oquendo (we need a stage name for him) that outlined all the healthy choices we can make to keep our minds and bodies healthy. It was awesome!!
Stay tuned for our upcoming healthy challenges. Ask your student which weekly challenge is their favorite. Healthy bodies and minds make it easy to stay safe, kind, respectful and responsible!
Fleming ELL Testing
Between January 21th and 31st, Fleming ELL students will participate in a state assessment of his or her English Language Proficiency level. This assessment is called the ACCESS for ELLs (English Language Learners). The students will be assessed by Ms. Lucia, our licensed ELL teacher, who has been trained to administer this state test. Ms. Lucia will work with your child’s teacher(s) to administer the test in the least disruptive way possible. State and federal laws require that all ELL students must take the ACCESS annually until they have met full proficiency. Some students who are close to proficiency may not be receiving direct services from an ELL teacher, but the ELL teacher is consulting with the student’s classroom teacher(s). Every ELL student receiving direct services and/or consultation must take the test annually until he or she reaches the level of English language proficiency determined by VT state guidelines. Once a student reaches this level of proficiency, he or she then moves from receiving services/consultation to being monitored by an ELL teacher for two years. The school will receive your child’s ACCESS test results at the end of the school year. Copies of test results will be sent to parents after teachers have reviewed the results.
Please let your ELL teacher or school principal know if you have any questions or concerns about the ACCESS test and your child’s participation in testing. Ms. Lucia would also be happy to talk with you about your child’s ACCESS results once we receive them.
Box Top Competition Round 2
There's also the option of scanning your receipt to bring money into the school, but unfortunately, there is no way currently to have them select a classroom currently.
All you have to do is download the app, and select Fleming at your home school, and scan your receipt when you're done grocery shopping!
Traffic Safety at Afternoon Pick Up
Just a friendly reminder of State Law, there is no idling in your vehicles, in front of the school. This is for the health and safety of the students, staff and others waiting outside to pick up their children. If you’re going to be waiting for more than 5 minutes, please shut off your engine while you wait. Or park your car in a visitors parking space and come inside to pick up your student and escort them to your vehicle. On below zero days we will have a cup of hot cider waiting for drivers who come inside and park their cars.
Please no illegal parking on Prospect Street. It is extremely unsafe to have students running across driveway and street traffic to enter a vehicle.
No idling please and no parking in no parking posted places. PLease do not park in fire lanes that circle the school building exterior.
MLK Dismissal Times
MLK is an early dismissal day for all students in the EWSD school district. Fleming will be out by 12:00 pm. Buses will still be an option, and will be on the same route schedule leaving Fleming by 12:30 depending on which bus. Lunch will be served prior to dismissal on that day.
Volunteers are always welcome!
