Summer Updates for Families
Message from the Principal
Dear Shepherd Hill Learning Community:
It is with great enthusiasm that I write to you from my new office on “The Hill!” It is an
honor to serve as Principal, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this
exceptional learning community. I look forward to experiencing all aspects of Shepherd Hill
culture, and I will work to ensure that Shepherd Hill continues to earn distinction as a
school of excellence!
Throughout the months of July and August, vacant positions have been filled, supplies and
materials have been ordered, and policies and procedures have been reviewed to ensure a
safe, orderly, and efficient learning environment for students and staff. Even in the midst of
unusually extreme summer heat and humidity, the maintenance and custodial staff have
been working tirelessly to prepare the building and grounds. Students have participated in
a range of activities, from Sports Academy, to Show Choir Bootcamp and Driver’s
Education. On August 23rd, we look forward to welcoming the Class of 2026 at the annual
Jumpstart Orientation.
As educators, we strive to be reflective practitioners, and we encourage students to
similarly engage in self-reflection. With the first day of school on the horizon, we should all
pause to consider how we might build upon previous successes, while also examining
opportunities for growth. As a learning community, if we collectively commit to working
hard, helping each other, and giving back to our school and local communities, the 2022-
2023 school year will prove to be a highly positive and productive experience for all.
I look forward to welcoming students back to “The Hill” on the first day of school, as well as
the many introductions that await in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please accept my
best wishes for a safe and enjoyable conclusion to summer vacation!
P.S. There is still plenty of time to finish (or start) your summer reading assignments!
With much anticipation,
Darren C. Elwell
Principal

Summer Reading Reminder!
All students are required to read at least one book from this year's summer reading list. Books required for AP classes do not count towards summer reading.
You may choose any book from the list. You do not need to choose a book selected by one of your teachers. Some books on this year's list have appeared on previous summer reading lists, and some have been made into TV shows and movies. You're welcome to watch the adaptations of the book (compare and discuss with friends!), but you must also read the book. You should also choose a new book to read--don't select a book you've already used for summer reading assignments prior to this year.
You have choice. Check out goodreads.com to learn more about any of these books and decide for yourself which one is best for YOU. Many of these titles are available as
e-books or audiobooks through the school or public library's online platforms. Use your dcrsd.org email address to login to the Sora app (school), or use your public library card
number to login to the Libby app (public). Both apps are free and work on most devices.
The summer reading flyer is attached at the bottom of this newsletter.

Important Updates from the Athletic Department
Hello and Happy Summer!
We are thrilled to announce that registration for Fall 2022 sports at Shepherd Hill is NOW OPEN!
The sign-up period will CLOSE on Friday, August 12th - so please DO NOT WAIT. It is better to sign up, even if you/your student are on the fence, than to wait and miss the deadline!
Remember: physical exams (signed/dated in the last 13 months) must be turned in to the school nurse, registration fee ($150.00 for all SH sports except cheer) paid online or in person, and baseline ImPACT concussion testing completed before the start of tryouts/practices. (*Fees are refunded if a student is "cut" or chooses not to come out for a team.)
Tryouts/practices are set to begin on Friday, August 19th (football only) and Monday, August 22nd (all other sports). Coaches will reach out to prospective student-athletes directly throughout the sign-up period. A list of Fall coaches and contact information can be found on the registration website, and will be provided on our SH Athletics website next week.
NEW THIS YEAR! Please proceed directly to our new registration website: https://dudleycharlton-ma.finalforms.com/ with a parent/guardian to sign up for one of the following sports:
Cheer
Football
Girls Soccer
Boys Soccer
Field Hockey

Boys Cross Country
Volleyball
Please see the links below or the attachments at the bottom of this newsletter for a welcome message and Parent Playbook for using the new FinalForms registration platform. We are excited to roll out this new software, with many new features, including the ability to upload physical exams directly during sign ups.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns. We will be sharing more information over the coming weeks, including the date for our mandatory Meet the Coaches Informational meeting. Have a safe, enjoyable summer - and please spread the word that sign-ups are open!
Best,
Jim ScanlonGlobal Awareness
After a two year hiatus from travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shepherd Hill students were once again able to extend learning into the world-wide classroom this past April allowing them to encounter new cultures, practice different languages and marvel at historic landmarks. An international perspective and awareness contributes to the success of our students in the ever-shrinking world and the globalized economy of the 21st century.
The Dudley-Charlton Regional School Committee approved an eleven-day trip to Spain,
Gibraltar, and Portugal during the April 2023 school vacation. The trip will begin in
Madrid, the capital of Spain, where students will see the highlights of the city including the
Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, and the Plaza Mayor. It will continue to Toledo with its
renowned Cathedral; Cordoba with its 8 th -century Mesquita featuring 850 candy-cane columns; Granada with the Alhambra where Christopher Columbus discussed his trip to “India” with Ferdinand and Isabella; and Mijas and Ronda, two quintessential Costa del Sol villages. Next, there will be a visit to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, and Seville with its Cathedral and Alcazar along with a flamenco show. From here, the group will continue to Portugal with a first stop in Evora, a walled Roman town with a preserved aqueduct, and continuing to Lisbon and Sintra. Highlights will include the Castelo de Sao Jorge, castle of the early kings of Portugal, and the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos built to honor the country’s great voyagers with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. During the eleven days on the trip, students will experience an immeasurable amount of history, art, architecture and culture that will provide real world learning opportunities to enhance their classroom studies. Students will also have an opportunity to use a language that they have been studying in the classroom and to hear and see it being used in a native setting.
Please email Mrs. Pierangeli at mpierangeli@dcrsd.org to receive details about the trip. Although initial enrollment took place in June, a limited number of spots remain that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To avoid disappointment, do not procrastinate. Looking back at history will provide students with the knowledge to look forward to the multifaceted social, political, and economic challenges of the 21st century.
