Sharing the Homeschool Heart...Testing and Assessments

I have a love-hate relationship with test scores. Testing to me in a traditional sense is useless. I don't believe it benefits the learner most of the time. Believe it or not, though, I LOVE State Testing and the Star 360! Surprised? I love seeing the results. I know that test results can be stressful and anxiety-producing for many families - they don't have to be though. I believe testing can be a useful tool to give you a clear pulse on your own personal homeschool lifestyle. Often it produces sincere satisfaction and validation that what you are doing in your home, for your kids, in regards to education, is working well for your family!

This week, I poured over the results of my children's star 360 test. They were almost exactly what I expected. Please do not be fooled into thinking that all of my children scored perfectly well. I have some who lag behind in certain subjects, some who are right on track, and some who score well above their grade level. Taking a look at the results and being able to compare them with what my assessment of their progress is, is very helpful for me. I don't tend to be discouraged by the results that show they are behind because I have spent so many years watching the progress of my older kids and seeing the enormous growth happen in certain years where their brains were ready to take their knowledge and education to the new level. In those years, they exceeded expectations and jumped up into the above-average category. Those same kids, who are now scoring above-average and in grade levels higher than what they're in, were the same little ones who scored way below their grade level many years ago. I share all this to give you hope and encouragement for your little ones who might not quite meet the standard you had hoped.

Little ones take time. They take extra special attention to detail to know exactly what to give them and when. Their schooling time is unique. One five-year-old may be ready to read and wants more phonics instruction and language arts assignments that build their reading skills and writing skills. On the other hand, another five-year-old may not be ready for that until they're 8 or 9. That's just the beauty of the way the human brain works. Seeing the differences in your students early on and accepting them, is key to successful progress. Learning to let go of expectations and understand each student as an individual will aid you in your confidence in your plans for homeschooling. Learn about their strengths and weaknesses, teach them in a way that meets their individual needs.

It's as if each student has an empty bucket that fills over the course of their adolescence and learning years. Some students' buckets fill very quickly, as though you turned on the faucet and allowed the bucket to fill rapidly spilling over almost instantly. Other students' buckets fill at a drip by drip pace one little piece of information after one small piece of information at a time, until they're full to the brim. That filling process could happen over 10 years. It's our job as homeschool parents to recognize which kind of bucket our students have, and begin accommodating their learning needs based on that. Knowing this early on takes away a lot of pressure from both you and your kids. Experiencing a lifestyle of lifelong learning with your student where together you fill the buckets drip by drip, can produce very successful well-rounded student. The only thing that gets in the way of that is the fear and worry you have of not doing enough or not being enough. That's comparison. Don't get stuck in the comparison game. The comparison will kill the homeschool vibe you've created. Just don't go there!

Keep pressing on homeschool warriors. You're in the fight for the education that best suits your child and their development. Use the tools you have at hand without being afraid. Rise and soar above the fear. You can do this! Remember, we're here for you. Reach out if you need help with a plan to fight hard for the best education you can create for your kiddos. You've got this!

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 11 to 7 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 7 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey.
