RESIDENTS ON SEVEN-MILE ISLAND
It is generally known that Seven-Mile Island served as a homesite for people for hundreds of years. An archaeological dig done by trained professionals in 1914 revealed the remains of Native American homes that were centuries old. The island’s more modern inhabitants continued to live there throughout the 19th century and into the early years of the 20th century until the completion of Pickwick Dam in 1939. There was a gripping account in the Florence Herald on March 14, 1896, of an island family, Mr. and Mrs. William Zeigler and their two children, being heroically rescued by two young men from Sheffield, Dave Garrett and Stewart Hennigan, who quickly procured a boat from the Steamer “Fisk.” The Zeiglers’ boat had overturned at the mouth of Cypress Creek and all four members of the family were in the water for more than two hours before being seen by the young men. The family had held onto their overturned skiff all the way to the Sheffield landing until they were finally rescued by Garrett and Hennigan. The account ends with this sentence: “The rescue was watched by fully fifty people from the Sheffield landing, who were touched by the heroic efforts of the mother to keep her little babes from drowning until the relief boat could reach them.”
