Wildcat Chat
Washington School: September Issue 2019
Letter from Ms. Brito
Dear Washington Families,
The school year is off to a fantastic start, and I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness and support from our staff and community. I would like to thank everyone for their flexibility and understanding during these first days with arrival and dismissal procedures. The safety of our students is our top priority and we are grateful for all of your support.
This is our first monthly installment of the Wildcat Chat for the 2019-2020 school year. Attached you will find a calendar of events for the months of September and October. Additional information can also be found on our school website.
Our first PTO Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. All PTO meetings will take place on the second Tuesday of every month in the Library Resource Center (LRC). Please join me in welcoming our new Co-Presidents, Heidi Auriemma and Tierney Adams, along with the entire PTO Board. I am incredibly grateful for the support and engagement of our community and look forward to partnering with all of you.
Washington is a truly special place to be, with dedicated staff, supportive families and amazing students. I feel privileged to join the Washington family, and look forward to a wonderful school year ahead. My door is always open, so please reach out with any questions or concerns.
Thank you again for your support, and I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming weeks!
Sincerely,
Ms. Brito

First Week of School at Washington
Important Things to Remember:
The Release of Students
Please ensure the following procedures are adhered to for the safety of our students:
1. Parents are required to provide written notice to the teacher stating the requested time of early release. If any person other than the parent or guardian is picking up a student, the school must have written notice. Please include that person on your emergency contact list if they plan to pick up your child on a regular basis.
2. If a student needs to be dismissed early for medical or emergency reasons, the parent or guardian is required to sign the child out at the main office. Students will remain with their teacher until notified by the office personnel.
Medical Records
All medical records and updated immunization information needs to be submitted to the school office. Please submit all medical records no later than the October 15th deadline.
Birthday Party Invitations
We are unable to distribute birthday party invitations in school unless ALL children from the class are invited. Social and Emotional Learning is an important aspect of education at Washington, and we appreciate your consideration to the feelings of all students.
Student Absences
Student attendance is critical to our success. In the event of an absence, please notify the main office. Note that the Parent and Student Handbook provides additional details regarding excused and unexcused absences and the district's homework policy.
Visitors
Parents and Guardians are always welcome at Washington Elementary School. All adult or student visitors are required to check in at the main office and provide a photo ID. Visitor name tags, provided by the office, should be worn by guests at all times. We ask all visitors to sign out at the main office prior to leaving the building.
Parent and Student Handbooks
Please be sure to review the Parent and Student handbook information with your child. It is very important they are aware of the expectations of Washington School and of District 64.
Voice Volume Expectations at Washington
Washington Voice Volume continues into the 2019-20 school year! Teachers and students will be following the ROARS expected behaviors which include voice volume levels for each location of the school. Following our expected voice volumes will assist with providing uninterrupted learning throughout the building and will ensure safety for all students in case of an emergency.
Look for the Washington Voice Volume charts throughout the school!
IMPORTANT HEALTH REMINDER FOR PARENTS OF CURRENT KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: Deadline for Health documents for entering Kindergarten
If you have not already done so, this is a reminder that October 15, 2019, is the State of Illinois and District 64 deadline for submitting proof of health requirements for entry into kindergarten. Failure to comply with the October 15th deadline will result in your child’s exclusion from school beginning on October 16, 2019.
In addition, students entering kindergarten must also undergo a complete vision examination performed by a physician or licensed optometrist. A Snellen chart vision check completed in a pediatrician’s office does not meet the requirement for a “complete eye examination.” The completed report must be submitted by October 15, 2019. Failure to present proof by this date requires written proof of an appointment for a scheduled eye examination within the next 60 days following October 15th.
If you have questions or concerns regarding these requirements, please contact your school’s Building Nurse directly.
Thank you for your cooperation.
