TEACHING AND LEARNING
Update for High School Students
Hopefully, high school students are checking their school email daily, and have established contact with their Trimester 3 teachers. If you have not yet done so, please reach out to your principal as soon as possible so teachers know to expect you in class after the break.
Next week is the regularly scheduled Spring Break, but on Monday, April 13, when school resumes remotely, high school students will be able to resume coursework for credit. The AHS staff is looking forward to reconnecting with their students.
Principal Sherri Northington has posted guidance on the AHS website.
Questions should be directed to Principal Northington at snorthington@asd5.org or the high school counselors:
- Tracy Miner - Class of 2021 and 2023
tminer@asd5.org - Mary Mainio - Class of 2020 and 2022
mmainio@asd5.org
Update for All Students
Your School and Teachers want to Hear from You:
Teachers throughout the district have been working all week to reach out to students and identify how to stay in contact during these challenging times.
All students will be given the opportunity to receive instruction this spring, but we need to hear from you to make it happen.
Teachers are eager to be in regular contact with students and have them ready to engage in instruction right after Spring Break on Monday, April 13. Please contact your school as soon as possible so they can welcome you back.
Learning Packets (not required, but hopefully helpful) for all grade levels will be available at Food Service locations beginning Monday, April 13. The schools and teachers will have more information when classes resume.
Reminders for Parents
If you have not done so already, please access your Skyward account and make sure your contact information is up-to-date so that we can stay in touch with you. If you've forgotten your log in or password, please email the school office coordinator.
Schools especially need updated cell phone numbers and email addresses.
Schools are taking Spring Break off, but there are Instructional Materials that families can access on the district web site to keep busy during this time.
Teachers are keeping virtual office hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Please encourage your student to use their district-issued email to communicate with their teacher(s). Social media is not an acceptable form of instructional communication between students and teachers.
The district is updating the website with resources on a regular basis under the School Closure tab.
Need a device?
As remote learning ramps up, students will need a device. If your student needs a device, please fill out the Device Check-out sheet and submit it via email to your student's principal. Please allow two to three days for arrangements to be made.
Need internet access?
Please check the internet access resources link on our website to obtain these services for reduced or free. If you know of someone with little or no internet access, please share this information with them.
Passwords to school resources
In order to access your child’s passwords, user names and badges, please contact your child’s teacher through their district email. A reply should be expected within two school days.
Preschool & Kindergarten Registration
This year, more than ever, we need to obtain a reliable count of incoming preschool and kindergarten students so we can be ready at all schools, for all students, this fall. If you have a preschooler who will be age 4, or student who will be age five, before September 1, please help by registering early.
We are still ironing out the details, but the district is planning to open pre-registration on Wednesday, April 15. The form will be online. We anticipate accepting scans or phone-photos of birth certificates and proof of address, with the hard copies of required documents to be collected in the fall.
Please watch next week’s newsletter for more information.
FOOD SERVICE
Food Service will continue during Spring Break
These Grab’n’Go meals are available from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.
All children and youth under the age of 18, and enrolled students over 18, are eligible to receive meals at no charge. ID is not required and there are no forms to fill out.
Lunch and breakfast are being provided to each student. The meals are designed to be picked up and eaten at a different location to encourage social distancing.
The program is being enhanced as we learn student needs and what is allowed under the federal guidelines. If you have a special circumstance you would like the district to consider, please contact Elyssa Louderback, elouderback@asd5.org, or Jaime Matisons, jmatisons@asd5.org
Learning Packets (not required, but hopefully helpful) for all grade levels will be available at Food Service locations beginning Monday, April 13. The schools and teachers will have more information when classes resume.

Send us your photos and student art work
Our district will continue to publish this newsletter weekly at least through the original closure date -- but staying at home means almost no photo opportunities of our students.
Send your best Staying Home, Staying Healthy -- and Still Learning photos -- or scan student artwork -- to districtnews@asd5.org. We'll use what we can to help illustrate future issues of the newsletter.
