Finding the main idea or identifying the topic sentence will be the reading focus this week.
Reading
We will finish up our Up in Flames unit this week. Students will be writing about what they learned, using topic sentences, supporting details and closing sentences. We will begin our next unit Coming to America at the end of the week or beginning of next week. This will go along with the 4th grade unit on Immigration and the 5th grade unit on Exploration.
Our younger students will begin new books this week. They will be continuing on question words, sentences and punctuation, retelling, finding facts, and comparing non-fiction and fiction paired texts.
Math
We will be finishing up our study of addition and subtraction with review and assessments this week. We will also be spending more time with problem solving this week as we apply our computation skills to real world problems.
Writing
We are finishing up on our opinion writing and moving into expository writing. Students will apply what they know about OREO writing (ask them what it means) to writing an expository text with topic sentence, supporting details and closing sentences. Students will be exploring this structure over he next couple weeks in their reading as well.
