Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade sign language students will perform The Pledge of Allegiance during our Chapel program during the month of March. This is a wonderful way for the students to show off all their hard work.
Sign Language
Though the Kindergarten and 1st grade students have Sign Language as one of their exploratory classes, students of other ages enjoy learning Sign Language in an after school club. 2013 GALA - "A Night at the Academy" www.peachtreeacademy.com/gala
In your child's book bag, or notebook last week there was a packet for you about our new annual Capital Campaign event, which will be called "A Night at the Academy". Below is the letter addressed to our parents. Please see packet for more details, a letter for businesses and family members, the sponsorship information and the Donor information forms. Please visit www.peachtreeacademy.com/gala to get more information, to purchases tickets, make donations, or to make reservations. If you do not have online access at this time, you may also call 770-860-8900 Ext. 1003 for more information, or to pick up extra packets for your business associates, friends and other potential donors.
Peachtree Academy Private School is holding its first Annual Event, “A Night at the Academy,” on April 20, 2013 at Peachtree Academy’s High School in Covington, GA. Highlights of the evening will include Live and Silent Auctions, a $5,000 Reverse Raffle drawing, prizes and dancing throughout the night. We are expecting several hundred supporters that include many business and community leaders, families and friends.
The money raised by this Gala will allow our school to build their robotics program and science labs, complete our football field, expand our Fine Arts program, and build our student scholarship fund. Our school has grown to serve Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students and the demand for a great school continues to grow each year. We hope that you will save the date for April 20, 2013 and make plans to attend this exciting event. It will be a nice opportunity to meet other parents at our school and network with some wonderful people who appreciate Peachtree Academy and the impact it has on our community.
Peachtree Academy has been an integral part of the Rockdale and Newton County communities since it was founded in 2001 by Ken and JaNice Van Ness. Peachtree Academy is a significant and treasured institution in our community and in the lives of our students and families. As a school, we strive to keep our tuition reasonable so that the dream of a great education can be a reality for families in our community. As you may know, 93% of our operating budget is supported by parent tuition. The remainder of our budget is supplemented by fundraising and the support of our Partners in Education. In our effort to consolidate some of our fundraising efforts, we are announcing our first annual event to support our Capital Campaign.
The tickets can be sold to family and friends outside of the area and will now get a chance to win $5,000 with their donation of $100. On the sponsorship pages that are attached, we have outlined various ways you can choose to participate in our 2013 “A Night at the Academy”. We have given you a letter to address to friends, family, and community members who want to participate in the event and gain recognition for their businesses. Peachtree Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. We would be so grateful if you would consider making a donation of some kind, and/or purchasing a corporate table.
Thank you for taking this opportunity to advertise your business and for considering Peachtree Academy Private School as an investment in our future’s most valuable resource, our children. Your tax-deductible contribution will help the school achieve its goals for continued growth. If you have questions, please call 770-860-8900, ext. 1003 and ask for Patty Smith.

IMPROVING YOUR CHILD'S READING COMPREHENSION
- Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads, which improves reading comprehension. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too. You can also take turns reading aloud.
- Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard. She should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for her to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
- Reread to build fluency. To gain meaning from text and encourage reading comprehension, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly - a skill known as fluency. By the beginning of 3rd grade, for example, your child should be able to read 90 words a minute. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so she'll become more fluent in her reading comprehension.
- Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling mightily with reading comprehension, he may need more help with his reading — for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
- Supplement class reading. If your child's class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will help her make her way through tougher classroom texts and promote reading comprehension.
- Talk about what he's reading. This "verbal processing" helps him remember and think through the themes of the book. Ask questions before, during, and after a session to encourage reading comprehension. For example:
Before: "What are you interested in about this book? What doesn't interest you?"
During: "What's going on in the book? Is it turning out the way you thought it would? What do you think will happen next?"
After: "Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it? What other books does it remind you of?"
