Thoughts from Dr. Pacatte
Students of Gurnee School District 56 participate in a Digital Citizenship Program through their district-provided iPads. This program is intended to be used in a self-paced manner, with three modules to be completed, per grade level, each year. Self-paced means students will access the modules on their own and complete the module and assessment. The hope is that they can do this at home with their parents. This will help to provide parents with the background knowledge and language common to the school’s, to support appropriate use of all digital devices, not just the district provided device. The program can be accessed on a computer as well as the iPad and has Spanish support available, if needed.
Each module focuses on a topic. Topics include iPad Responsibility, Your Online Reputation, Using the Camera, Avoiding Plagiarism, Cyberbullying, and many others. Students work their way through content on the topic, review the Check for Understanding, and complete a quiz. The expectation is a 100% on the quiz before moving on to the next module. Their performance will be recorded and an update as to their progress will be shared with the parents at report card time.
We are asking that all students log into their device with their google log in and follow the directions provided in the video found on our website.
The program may also be used as a reteaching tool. Teachers will have access to the program and may utilize the program to support or redirect a student who may be struggling with appropriate use of a device. Parents may use the program as a reteaching tool in the home, as well. If your child has misstepped with an iPad, computer or personal phone you should feel free to go to the Digital Citizenship program and use the curriculum to remind them of your expectations. The information is all there for review at any time. It isn’t necessary for them to take the quiz each time, but it certainly can be done if you feel appropriate.
If you have questions regarding this program please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher.

Breakfast Survey
BREAKFAST SURVEY-Please take just a quick minute to complete this very short 2 question breakfast survey. We need to gather data for the State of Illinois. Here it is. The deadline is October 30th. Sadly, the State of Illinois is considering discontinuing the method District 56 uses to provide breakfast to our students; this may force us to stop breakfasts for everyone, so we’d really love your help with this. Thank you!!
