Monthly Theme: Accountability
Principal's Message
Greetings Fir Grove Families!
March is a month to practice accountability and students in grades 3-5 and all English language learners are gearing up for state testing.
What an eventful week! Thank you for your shared teamwork with an Inclement Weather Early Release, a Snow Day, and a Late Start. Phew! We are grateful that everyone got to and from school safely and that kids had a chance to get their hands in some snow this year.
Coming to school and being on time is critical to learning. Teachers love to see their smiling faces here on time every day. Here are a few clarifying details about absences. If students are late more than 90 minutes in the morning it is considered a half day absence. If students leave school early by 90 minutes or more, it is considered a half day absence.
School begins at 8:00 am, so arriving after 9:30 am would result in a morning half day absence. School ends at 2:35 pm so leaving before 1:05 pm would result in an afternoon half day absence. With early dismissal Wednesdays, school ends at 1:05pm so leaving at 11:35am or earlier would result in a half day absence. The reason for the absence may be either excused or unexcused, but it still counts as an absence.
We will be holding our annual PTO Dudes for Donuts on Thursday morning, 3/15, from 7:05-7:55am.
We will also be giving away 10 bikes to students in grades 3-5 later this month. To be eligible, students must have had perfect attendance from February 5-March 15 and can only have one tardy. Thank you to our community partnership with the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition.
Have a great weekend and stay warm,
Warmly,
Erin Miles

Music Notes
When was the last time you danced?? If it’s been a while, there are lots of ways to bring dance back into your life. The living-room family dance-off is a good one… just put on your PJs, pump up your favorite tunes, and go!
We’ve been dancing up a storm in the music room lately. Besides being fun and social, dance a great way to learn about the structure and design of music — the grouping of beats into measures, the contrast & repetition of phrases, and the order of sections in a song.
I recently posted the lyrics to one of our dance songs on the music room website: Heel & Toe Polka. This one is what we’d call a “mixer” because your partner changes often. In a double circle formation, partners stand facing one another with hands joined (inside partner / outside partner). All sing through each phrase and do what the words say — ask a 2nd or 3rd grader to show you. After the ‘swing’ at the end, the outside partner rotates one person to the left and the song starts again!
