ISTEP+ Testing Information
This week we will begin the Applied Skills portion of the ISTEP+ at Plainfield High School. As you might recall from our previous email, there are some changes to testing for the 2015-2016 school year.
- There is a new ISTEP+ Test for Grade 10 English / Language Arts, Grade 10 Math, and Grade 10 Science. The English / Language Arts and Math tests will be given to all sophomores, and the Science test will be given to all students enrolled in Biology.
- This new ISTEP+ test reflects the changes to the Indiana Academic Standards in these content areas.
- The English and Math ISTEP+ tests will be the graduation tests for students in the Class of 2019 and beyond.
- Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors must still pass the English 10 and Algebra End-of-Course Assessment for graduation.

Caffeine
Every day I see students coming in to school with very large drinks, many of which contain huge amounts of caffeine. I wonder, what effect is this having on them and how it might relate to their health and their school work? According to www.kidshealth.org, caffeine is thought to be safe for teens in moderate amounts of 100 mg per day. A single 16 oz. energy drink contains 160 mg of caffeine. Five oz. of brewed coffee is worth 115 mg. One oz. of milk chocolate provides 6 mg.
The effects of excess caffeine identified by www.nlm.nih.gov include:
· Making you jittery and shaky
· Making it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep
· Causing headaches or dizziness
· Making your heart beat faster or cause abnormal heart rhythms
· Causing dehydration
· Making you dependent on it so you need to take more of it. If you stop using caffeine, you could have withdrawal symptoms.
These are the very complaints students present with daily. I’ll just bet that sometimes there is a connection!
One benefit of caffeine is that it can be a good treatment for migraines. On the other hand, it can also cause headaches. Suddenly stopping caffeine can cause headaches as well. This stuff must be stronger than we give it credit for!
How about doing an inventory of our family’s caffeine intake for a week? Maybe that would give us answers that lead to solutions for some of the issues our kids deal with.
Meningitis for Seniors
Remember students who will be seniors during the next school year are required to have a meningitis vaccine before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Please give the record of that vaccine to the school nurse as soon as possible.
