CHS Update & Upcoming Events
10-21-19
Almost Halfway...
It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through our first semester in the 2019-2020 school year. With that, we will be sending progress reports home with students and getting ready for conferences. Now is a great time to connect with your child's teacher regarding their progress in class.
PSAT/SAT Practice Tests
It took us a little longer than we anticipated, but we will be releasing the results of our PSAT/SAT practice tests to our 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students late this week and early next week. For many of us (myself included), the SAT is a different type of test than what we took in high school. In fact, while both the ACT and SAT are essentially reading tests, the SAT has a much greater emphasis on critical thinking skills. Even if you feel that you can't help, here are some key ways to support your child's achievement:
- Encourage your child to use Khan Academy to get extra support. A focused area (like Heart of Algebra or Expression of Ideas) is better than focusing on every area.
- Encourage your child to set realistic goals. All of our students are capable of getting 3-5 more correct on this assessment.
- Be aware of what they're hearing. If they hear a trusted adult say they can't answer these types of questions, they are more likely to adopt those same feelings.
CHS Picture Retakes
We will be having picture retakes on Thursday, 10/24, all day in school. These are for students who didn't like their original pictures and wish to have them retaken.
Academic Letter/National Honor Society
On Tuesday, 10/29, we will be honoring our Academic Letter award recipients as well as our new inductees into National Honor Society. Our Academic Letter ceremony begins at 6:00 pm with the National Honor Society ceremony beginning immediately following.
All students received an invitation if they are included in these ceremonies. If you have questions, please reach out to your child's counselor.
Blood Drive
CHS Student Council will be hosting a blood drive on 10/31. Students must be at least 16 years old and can sign up online.
Costumes
Students are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween as a part of a fundraiser for Captains. Students are reminded that they may not wear masks or have other prohibited items for school as a part of any costume.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for November 1st in the afternoon and November 4th from 6-8 pm in the gym. Our 11/1 conferences are scheduled appointments with teachers, while the 11/4 conferences are open to the public. Please contact your child's teacher to schedule a time to discuss their progress in class.
