Theme Analysis
By: Michael Quirk
What is it?
How do we use it?
Analyzing the theme can be difficult because it requires the reader to be able to see something that isn't necessarily written down. To analyze the theme, one must know the concepts and beliefs stated and be able to decipher that and come up with the overall theme. To find the theme, using thinking maps can help you gather ideas but it is ultimately up to you to be able to make the connection to the bigger picture.
When do we use it?
We should always analyze the theme and find the bigger picture, but it is most important when trying to reflect on the work usually when fiction. To have the best reflection, you must know the concepts and beliefs the author states in the book, but you also need to see the bigger and overall importance. Also, when comparing similar books, it is important to know the theme and analyze theme because books can have the same theme even though they are about completely different subjects.
