Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
I love every opportunity I get to see students engaged in learning at Hallinan! Our students are writing, reading, calculating and creating every day. You will be able to see your child's report card and view their progress tomorrow, Friday, February 10 by 4 pm. Report cards are accessed through ParentVUE, please contact Lee or Linda if you are unable to login. For more information, including how to interpret the grading scale, please see the Standards-Based District Report Card section under District Information below.
Another important measure of progress is how your child feels at, and about, school. Please ask them what's going well, what they're most proud of and what is most challenging for them. I'm interested in their feedback, please feel free to reach out to me - or have them reach out to me.
While you are reviewing your child's report card, please take a moment to check their attendance totals, located on the top right corner. Each minute of the school day provides opportunity for learning, and it’s noticeable when students miss time. Frequent absences and tardiness affect your child’s learning opportunities. Often, the number of days students are absent accumulates without parents realizing how many days have been missed.
Hallinan is committed to student’s academic achievement, health, social and emotional well-being. It is so important for students to be at school, each and every day. And, we love having them here! Thank you for your support.

School Counselors Week
This week is National School Counseling Week. Hallinan is very fortunate to have the amazing Brittany Erspamer as our school counselor. Brittany, also known as Ms E, wears many hats, among them she is our Social Emotional Learning teacher, she leads small groups, she is a loyal confidante to students and staff, she is a problem solver extraordinaire, she is the most magnificent school cheerleader, she greets students every morning and helps with dismissal, she knows every student's name and is an advocate for all. Thank you Ms E!!!
You may not know Ms E, but your children sure do!
Honor Choir Performance
Hallinan fifth graders represented our school last weekend in the OMEA District 14 Honor Choir. Students practiced all day Saturday at Lakeridge High School with guest conductor Adam Johnson and 9 other participating schools. An amazing concert was performed that night for family and friends alongside the Middle School Honor Choir. Students selected for the choir all auditioned with Mr. Haynor and spent months preparing the difficult material. Students participating were:

Hello Hallinan Families!
Slice of Gratitude
We want to give a big thank you to the parents who have donated so far to our April 13th auction. Ryan Hughes, Paul Searle, Barbara Carbone, Jessi Silcho, Nichole Blum (sourced a great donation!), and Tara Lee Clasen.
Here are some links to some fabulous business donations so far:

What can a business donate?
Donations from any businesses do not have to be "on point." A law firm doesn't have to auction off legal advice and a financial planner doesn't have to auction off financial advice. ANYONE can sponsor a creative basket and market their business or brand. Please reach out to the auction team with any questions pto.auction.hallinan@gmail.com
Can you help us find auction items?
We need parents to help us mail, email and go into businesses asking for donation items. Many businesses want the chance to donate because it is GREAT advertising and a 501c write-off.
You can do this alone or form a group! Email other parents in your child's grade, meet up, hit the pavement and talk to business owners, and then go out for coffee!
What is the auction raising funds for?
We are thrilled to announce that the auction will be raising money for STEAM Lego WeDo robotic kits. We will be purchasing ten new and updated robotic kits which will open up a lot of new STEAM projects and allow all kids (working in a group) access to the equipment at the same time.
We are also thrilled to raise money for our brand-new native garden scape. Our new certified garden will be located in front of the school (currently an unused area). This garden will benefit wildlife and ALL kids at Hallinan. The project is being spearheaded by Britt Mara and Erin Saylor and they are working with others to design and certify the garden. The garden will be another chance for Hallinan kids to learn about the value of---and learn how to care for--- outdoor space. This bee, butterfly, and bird-friendly garden scape will be a place for learning, reading, and storytelling.
So if you want your child to have access to new high-tech robotic equipment and outdoor reading space, PLEASE sign up to help with the auction.

Recess Help
Ever wonder what recess is all about? Now you have an opportunity to help Hallinan and hang out with students at recess as a recess monitor! OBOB
OBOB Battles have begun! The students are doing a great job showing off all the work they've put in over the last couple of months. Thank you to all the parents, coaches, and volunteers who've helped to bring OBOB back to its full potential this year. Not only have your children had the opportunity to read a variety of quality literature, but they have also shown cooperative learning skills within their teams, all while having fun. If your student missed their first battle their t-shirts are in the front office. Please stop by and pick them up.
OBOB Semi-Finals are this Sunday. We are looking for a few more Moderator and Score/Time Keeper Volunteers. Battles will start at 12 and should wrap up by 2:00.

Standards-Based District Report Card
The Lake Oswego School District uses a standards-based report card for students in elementary schools. This report card measures a child’s progress toward proficiency or mastery of the priority standards in Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking, and Math.
This approach provides the means for communicating a child’s learning in more specific terms. Standards-based reporting articulates clear end-of-year grade-level standards for each subject. Using the scale below, teachers will communicate where a child resides on a learning continuum by indicating the student’s progress toward mastery of each identified grade-level standard.
The standards-based reporting scale:
4: The student works consistently at an in-depth and complex level within or beyond the end-of-year standard*
3: The student meets the grade-level expectation of the standard
2: The student nearly meets the end-of-year standard
1: The student demonstrates limited proficiency on the end-of-year standard
Important notes about the scale:
● Reporting is based on the end-of-year grade-level expectation. Therefore, proficiency would not be expected in the middle of the school year.
● A “2” represents the expected target for the majority of the school year as this indicates the child is progressing with the standard as expected. A “3” will be given when the student completely meets the grade-level standard.
● Details of what is expected at mastery level can be found on the report card or on the list of assessed grade-level standards.
● A “1” may prompt additional communication from the classroom teacher so parents will better understand their child’s learning journey.
*It is rare that a child will receive a “4” especially at the end of the first semester. A “4” score may prompt additional communication from the classroom teacher to discuss ways he/she is meeting the child’s unique learning needs.
Behavior Learning Targets are approached differently than end-of-year standards. Report cards will be available in ParentVUE on Friday, February 10. For more information about your child’s progress, please contact their classroom teacher.
2023-24 School Year Registration Now Open
Registration for the 2023-24 school year is now open for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. LOSD is pleased to offer online registration through its parent portal, ParentVUE (contact your resident school for help with logging in). See the Registration & Verification page of the LOSD website for guidance. Parents/guardians do not need to register students for 2023-24 who are currently attending during the 2022-23 school year.
