Assignment/Homework - Request
We have had a few incidents this week with assignments being taken out of book bags/ trappers at home. Please try to empty book bags and trappers WITH your child present. That way they can tell you what papers are still needed for class in the future. We appreciate all your help and are looking forward to a great year!
What's Happening?
Math
We just started Topic 1 - Place Value in our math book this past week. We will be learning how to:
- use exponents to write powers of 10/find products
- read, compare, and round whole numbers/decimals
- write whole numbers/decimals using standard form, expanded form, and number names
- represent decimals to thousandths as fractions AND fractions with denominators of 1,000 as decimals
Students will be getting a Reflex Math username and password very soon. Encourage your child to get on this program at least three times a week for 10-15 minutes. Getting on Reflex Math will help students improve their math fluency.
ELA
In reading, we have been working hard at setting up how our workshop model will run. The students are doing a great job. Students do have the ability to check out books from the school library, as well as Mrs. Garcia's library. We will begin reading logs within the next couple weeks, and for now we just ask that you encourage your child to read 30 minutes a day!
Science
In science, students are learning the steps of the scientific method. The scientific method is used by scientists to answer a question. They do this by testing a hypothesis through experiments. We will be conducting a few experiments in class to help students better understand these steps.
The scientific method includes:
- Ask a testable question.
- Form a hypothesis
- Plan the procedure/Gather materials
- Conduct an investigation to gather data
- Record/Interpret data
- Write a conclusion
Social Studies
In social studies we are beginning to talk about maps, and what makes up a map. Students will need to know how to use a map key, and compass, and be familiar with cardinal direction. At the end of this unit students will be assessed through creating their own map.
