Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Two Week 4 - 25 May 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
Today the College acknowledged Sorry Day which commemorates 10 years since former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised to our Indigenous people in 2008 for the Stolen Generations. My thanks to Miss Chloe Collard who was instrumental in the organisation of commemorative events for our community on the day.
Earlier this week the College hosted the National School Debating Competition. It was fantastic to host students from around Australia – including New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania in this national event. All the debaters were extremely confident in their presentation and arguments. It was a great educational opportunity for the College and I thank Mrs Donna Gratton and Ms Stella Johns for their organisation of this event.
Yesterday, the College staff was blessed with a delicious morning tea by Year 9 student Jordana Crane and her family. This was to raise funds for the Cancer Council as part of their Biggest Morning Tea event, and was organised completely by Jordana and her family. Cancer touches all of us and I thank Jordana and her family for providing the morning tea, which many staff enjoyed and subsequently donated generously to this important cause.
I am nearing the conclusion of my interviews with future families of the College. This process for Year 7, 2020 student entry will conclude in Week 7 of this term. Parents who have not yet submitted Enrolment Forms for siblings must do so immediately. It is wonderful to know that so many families want their children to attend Emanuel Catholic College, however, it is unfortunate that many families will miss out due limited places.
Last week the College held its annual Academic Scholarship Examinations for students commencing Year 7 in 2019 and 2020. There was a large crowd of Year 5 & Year 6 primary school students attempting these tough examinations. I wish them well with their efforts and will announce our Scholarship recipients by the end of this term.
The College Performing Arts is preparing for its College Musical, The Wizard of Oz. Students from across year groups are practising intensely for this spectacular event. It is impressive to see actors, singers, musicians and dancers all working hard for this special production. Performances will be held at the College Sport and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence in early Term 3 on July 20 and 21. Tickets will be available for purchase soon.
Next week, Friday 1 June is a College Pupil Free Day creating an extra-long week end for our community.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

THE BUTTERFLY
Here is a little story worth thinking about.
Our friend Elio once found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole...until it suddenly stopped making any progress and looked like it was stuck.
So Elio, who had a kind heart, decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swollen body and small shrivelled wings.
Elio didn’t think anything of it, and sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the butterfly. But that never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with tiny wings and a swollen body.
Despite his good intentions, Elio hadn’t realised that the restricting cocoon and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings, to prepare itself for flying once it was out of the cocoon.
Our struggles in life develop our strengths.
Without struggles we never grow and never get stronger, so its important for us to tackle challenges on our own, and not always be relying on help from others.
Fr Bryan Rosling - College Chaplain

Year 11 Parent / Student Information Night – Subject Selection 2018
When – Monday 25 June
Venue – Sports and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence
Time – 7.00pm
What do I need to do if I wish to go to University? What is the difference between Uni and TAFE? Do my subjects give me the best opportunity to go to University? The transition from Year 11 to Year 12 can be a very easy task if you know the direction you wish to take beyond school. However, if you have not achieved the desired results in your ATAR courses at the end of Semester 1 or have decided to change your pathways, what are my options now?
The Parent/Student Information Night is a compulsory event for families at the College. At least one parent and the student entering Year 12 are required to attend. To allow for all parents to attend this evening, a slightly later starting time has been organised. I look forward to meeting you during the evening.
Congratulations Mitchell Forsyth – AFL Umpire
Late last year Mitchell was selected to be part of the WAFL Talent Academy and commenced umpiring WAFL Colt games this season.
A few weeks ago, it was announced that Mitchell has been selected to umpire at the "Bronze Talent Camp" which is the NAB AFL Women Under 18 National Championships on the Gold Coast in July. To umpire at this carnival, you must be umpiring at the WAFL Colts level for each state. Mitchell was the only field umpire chosen from WA.
Congratulations again Mitchell on your selection, as a community we are extremely proud of all your achievements and wish you continued success in all your future endeavours with umpiring and towards your goal of becoming an AFL umpire.
Mr Vince Bellini - Deputy Principal Years 11 and 12 | Curriculum

EMMANUEL COMMEMORATES SORRY DAY
This week at the College, Emmanuel commemorated Sorry Day. This year it was especially significant, as it has been 10 years since former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised to our Indigenous people in 2008 for the Stolen Generations. Sorry Day commemorates the children that were forcibly removed from their families.
To commemorate Sorry Day, the Aboriginal flag was flown at half mast, and during our Form period, all students participated in a minutes silence to pay respect to the children taken and the families left to grieve their absence. Students also watched a short clip of Kevin Rudd speaking in Parliament and his official apology.
Our Head of The Arts teacher Mr Kieran Gherardi, designed and created a SORRY sign to be displayed at the front of the College for the wider community to see. Our Student Services Officer, Melanie Ormshaw also organised for students to design a hand print that was put together to create a Sorry Display with a 1000 hands united in Student Services.
Miss Chloe Collard - Aboriginal & Islander Liaison Officer

SORRY DAY DANCE - COLLEGE ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE
On Friday 25 May, we acknowledge ‘Sorry Day’ – a national event to commemorate the mistreatment of the Aboriginal people of Australia.
On Tuesday in our Week 3 Assembly, the Year 9 and 10 dance students performed an abstract contemporary dance piece to the Sorry Day song. This dance highlighted the plight, fears, sadness and isolation of the Indigenous people during the colonisation of Australia, when children were taken from their families and Aboriginal communities were badly mistreated. It was exciting to have the opportunity to perform for the College and highlight such an important part of our country’s history.

EMMANUEL HOSTS NATIONAL SCHOOL DEBATING COMPETITION
Emmanuel Debating Club and The English Department had the privilege of hosting The National School Debating Competition at our beautiful campus on Wednesday 23 May. Eight classes, ranging from Years 7 to 11, participated in this incursion in the SPACE and selected classroom where they listened to top debaters representing their states - Western Australia (Hurray!), Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia, on topics such as “We support a policy of forcing integration of refugee communities with the main population’. The winning teams – South Australia and Tasmania, received a rousing applause from our students who thoroughly enjoyed this rigorous and highly entertaining competition.
Our very own Emmanuel Debaters are currently working hard for their upcoming competition against Aquinas College at 6:30 pm on 6 June at All Saint's College on the motion 'That young people, where able, should be made to work for the dole.' I look forward to seeing Emmanuel students coming to support our speakers as well as dropping in at our Tuesday debating sessions during lunch in A5 classroom. Keep up the good work and best of luck, Emmanuel Debaters!
Mrs Stella John - Coordinator Emmanuel Debating Team

BLAIR WALSH - WA STATE UNDER 16'S BASKETBALL SELECTION
Emmanuel’s Blair Walsh (Year 10) has been selected to play for WA Metro U16 in the Australian Junior Championships on the Sunshine Coast from 6-13 July 2018. The WA basketball website describes the Championships as below:
“These Championships provide the first true opportunity for junior Australian athletes to represent their state at an elite competition. The Under-16’s is a vital aspect of the pathway while also giving the athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of national team coaches.”
The selection process started in November 2017 when Basketball WA held open trials over a series of sessions throughout the weekend. From those trials 26 athletes were selected. There were then three weekend camps through January, February and March. After the camps concluded the squad was reduced from 26 to 16. Athletes then competed in two practice matches in April to reduce the squad from 16 to 12, then on 8 May the final squad of 10 was announced.
It has been an extensive trial process and it is a credit to Blair’s determination and skillset to make the final team. Well done Blair. We wish him all the best for the upcoming Junior Championships on the Gold Coast.

YEAR 11 - SPORT AND RECREATION EXCURSION
On Monday May 21, our Year 11 Sport and Recreation students were lucky enough to visit the Canning Vale Police Station and Canning Vale Fire Station, helping them to understand how they 'Respond to Emergency Situations.'
To start the day the students were taken for a tour of the Police station and given the opportunity to see the armoury, cells and a number of Police cars. After the tour Detective Sergeant Andrew Broadley gave a presentation regarding how the Police go about responding to different situations and how each job is prioritised, so that all resources can be dispatched, as required.
The second part of the excursion was with the WA Fire Fighters. Again, they took our students for a tour of the Fire Station and showed the students how everything worked, including the Fire Trucks. After the tour was complete, they put on a scenario situation where six students were trapped in a van and then proceeded to use the “Jaws of Life” to cut open the van and rescue all six students. They also demonstrated the use of the water cannon.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the WA Fire Department and WA Police again for giving up their time to host our Emmanuel students.
Mr Ryan Henley - Head of Health & Physical Education

SASJ SPORT UPDATE
SASJ Round 3 vs St Norbert’s College
Round 3 of the Term 2 SASJ Competition saw both boys basketball teams perform strongly against quality St Norbert’s teams. The Year 7 boys came away very strong winners, while the Year 8/9 Boys fought hard to go down narrowly by 7 points.
The netballers are also going very well. Year 7 girls have enjoyed their first taste of netball at Emmanuel, winning 2 out of 3 games and performing well to win by 9 points this week. A similar affair with our Year 10 netball team, winning a close contest by 2 points. The Year 8/9 girls team came up against a strong outfit and unfortunately were defeated by 20 points. Both soccer teams were defeated comfortably by very strong teams. Their skills are continually improving and look to bounce back against Seton Catholic College next week.
Mr Jarrod Parry - Director of Sport

This year’s College Production is the highly anticipated Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, which our students will be presenting to the community on 20 and 21 July. In this charming and family-friendly musical, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path as it rips through their home in Kansas, and are whisked to the magical land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes on her journey to find the Wizard of Oz, whom everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion, their dream of getting a brain, a heart and some courage.
This enchanting musical shows the importance of loyalty, friendship, bravery and persistence, whilst giving the all-important message: there’s no place like home. It is a wonderful and fitting musical production for our students at Emmanuel to get involved in, and an exciting opportunity to display the amazing talent we have here at Emmanuel. Watch this space for ticketing information, coming in Term Two!
Miss Sara Middleton - Teacher

FROM THE FINANCE DESK
REMINDER Term One school fees are now overdue and Term 2 fees were payable by Friday 4 May 2018!!
We are confident that all of our parents appreciate the necessity and expectation in regards to paying school fees on time. With this in mind it is expected that if you have not yet paid please make every effort to pay your account as soon as possible so that future plans and developments at the College are not affected.
If you are on a scheduled payment arrangement with the College, we advise you to monitor your payments to ensure your account will be finalised by the end of October 2018. A large number of families set up their arrangements based on the fees and charges set at the commencement of the year, but fail to include additional charges – VET charges and Instep. It is imperative that all families check their fee statement every term and make the necessary adjustments. It is distressing for families to get to the end of the year and find that the school fee account is in arrears. It is not the responsibility of the College to manage your school fee account.
If at any time you find that you are not able to manage your current repayment schedule, immediate contact must be made so that a meeting can be held to discuss the account. Likewise if you are experiencing any financial hardship please contact the College as we are quite amenable to making realistic payment arrangements for parents who find themselves in such situations, rather than making no payment at all.
NEW BPAY – BILLER CODES
Parents/Guardians please be advised that the Centralised BPAY Biller Service previously provided by Catholic Development Fund (CDF) has changed and the BPAY Biller Code unique to your school fee account is no longer valid. The new BPAY Biller Code is 280511 - please amend your banking records to reflect this change.
To discuss your school fees please contact either Maria or Rachel on 9414 4050 or via accounts@emmanuel.wa.edu.au
Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.
