The Veteran’s Day Legacy Project
By Trevor K.
The Veteran’s Day Legacy Project was held in the cafeteria by a fifth grade class at the Marie V. Duffy Elementary school on November 18, 2016. A class of 23 students had worked on the project for weeks and had a lot of effort put into it. Local veterans were invited for a breakfast in the cafeteria. All the kids were divided into groups that each played an important role.
One group devoted their time to set up and decorate the cafeteria with food on the tables arranged in a beautiful display and decorations with red, white, and blue tinsel. The other group greeted the veterans by saying hello and giving them a name tag. Then they would walk the veterans to the cafeteria to have the breakfast. The other group’s job was keeping the veterans company by talking to them or listening to their stories. The last group was a duo of student photographers that took pictures of the people and decorations.
The band director, Mr. Orrico, worked with the middle school band and played the national anthem for the veterans, which was a breathtaking performance. They also gave a big thanks to a parent, Mrs. Kruzsely, who brought in chocolate stars for the veterans as treats in patriotic colors. The breakfast included food such as waffles, French toast, and blueberry muffins. After the breakfast, the veterans were able to come to all of the fifth grade classrooms to tell them about their stories, how they became heroes. The stories were very interesting and included lots of details about each of the veteran’s lives. They gave so much to our country and believe it or not… they gave something to the students as well. As the stories ended, two large boxes came in and inside were flags for all the students.
The veterans would like to thank the fifth grade students for setting up the cafeteria, greeting them, talking with them, letting them share their stories, and they would like to thank them for just participating in the event and letting them get to know the veterans. Mrs. Wood and Ms. Moran, the fifth grade teachers who helped the students plan the event said, “Everyone did a great job.”
We would like to thank the Marie V. Duffy Elementary School fifth graders for their hard work and devotion that went into this project. It is amazing how a fifth grade class can do all this in such a short amount of time. They met every Friday afternoon to plan it out. They didn’t get a lot of time to do it, but yet they still did it. Thank you again, fifth grade, for all you have done.
