Arkansas Oil Boom Towns
As people learned about Arkansas's oil potential towns such as El Dorado and Smackover became highly populated. These towns became crowded with people of all nationalities looking for work, which led to crime.
Tenants and Sharecropping and Growing Violence
As there was less and less work available white people wanting jobs as sharecroppers would scare off black sharecroppers to make more work available. An organization called the Ku Klux Klan, or the KKK, was created at about this time. As their group grew they became violent and attacked those who weren't white Americans and Protestant.
The Flood of 1927
A flood that affected many states, but Arkansas the most. It is believed to be one of the worst floods in U.S. history. It took months for the water to drain, and in safety camps for the homeless, disease was spreading.
The New Deal
When America was in a depression FDR created something called the New Deal. It was a series of programs that helped those without food, those without jobs, and to make the economy better and healthier.
