HOMECOMING 2019!

HOMECOMING COOKOUT AND PARADE!

Student Council is hosting the first ever Homecoming Cookout and Parade this Thursday night from 6-8pm at the front loop of the school. We will have a parade of clubs and sports, the official presentation of the Homecoming Court, an auction to benefit the football team, food, games, and performances. Come join us to celebrate Homecoming and hype up the community before taking on the dragons Friday night.

Don't forget to attend our 39th annual College Fair MONDAY NIGHT 5:30-7 tonight in the Wildcat Arena! We have over 60 colleges, universities and military representatives signed up to attend!

DETAILED INTERSESSION INFORMATION - UPDATED 9/23/19 @ 12:15 pm!

Parents,

The Oak Ridge High School Fall Intersession will be held September 30th through October 3rd from 8:00 to 3:30. Students may sign up for the morning session (8 to 11:30), the afternoon session (12:00 to 3:30), or both. Intersession applications are now available in the student services office and the counseling office. Students may recover failing grades for one or two classes, so this is a great opportunity for your child to get back on track. The first grading period ends on Friday, September 20,and report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, September 24. Intersession applications are due by Friday, September 27, at noon. There is no cost for intersession, but lunch is available for purchase.

Guidelines for Intersession:

  • Students are eligible for grade recovery if they have a Term One grade of 50% or higher
  • Students with a grade below 50% for the term may participate in intersession by permission of teacher only.
  • Students with 50% or higher who complete the assigned grade recovery program with a grade of C or better will receive a minimum final grade of D for Term 1. (CP-72, Honors-69, AP-67)
  • Students are required to attend each day of intersession.
  • Students may recover grades for two courses during the intersession.
  • Students must fulfill all assigned work for intersession in order to recover the grade.
  • Students must bring school assigned laptop and earbuds to use for intersession
  • School rules apply for intersession.

If your child needs transportation for intersession, please submit an intersession transportation request form by Tuesday, September 24 at 3:00 p.m.. These forms are available in the main office and counseling office as well. We can not provide bus transportation for students if we do not have their information in by Tuesday.

This fall we are offering an ACT prep class just in time for the senior ACT retake on October 29. ACT prep is available on a first come first served basis, and we will fill the a.m. session first. The ACT prep applications are also available in students services and counseling.

ORCHESTRA CONCERT

The largest high school orchestra in the southeast, ORHS, under the direction of Dr. Doug Phillips, will host their Fall Concert on Tuesday, September 24th at 7:00 pm in the ORHS Performing Arts Auditorium!

AP TESTING - BIG CHANGES FOR SIGNUPS!


Students taking an AP Exam this year must register via myAP. Their teacher can assist with this if they haven't done so. The registration window is now open and closes November 1. Students must either pay a deposit of $40 per exam or pay for all exams in full by November 1st. Only exams with a deposit or payment in full as of November 1st will be ordered. If students choose to pay by deposit, the balance will be due the week of April 20th. Students may drop off their payment in the main office before school, after school, or at lunch October 28th - November 1st.

Students who plan to take an AP Exam for a course in which they are not enrolled must see Mr. Foust during the registration window.

IT'S TIME TO ORDER CLASS RINGS!

Jostens will take orders for class rings and graduation supplies in the Main Lobby and the Arena Concessions’ Kiosk OCTOBER 17th during lunch. Mrs. Ledden does not accept orders. Please turn in your order to the Jostens representative at either location during 5th period. Any student - any grade - needing a class ring or graduation supplies packet should come to CS347. $60 deposit required for both graduation supply orders and class rings.

NHS TUTORING HAS BEGIN!

NHS Tutoring—The National Honor Society holds tutoring sessions every week. No matter if you need math help or assistance writing an essay, NHS students are here to help! Come get tutoring relief for assignments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-3:45.

WALK ACROSS TN!

Walk Across Tennessee starts in 4 Weeks. We will kick off this event on Monday, October 14th, so make sure you have your teams together before fall break. For your convenience UT Extension has created a Google Form for online registration. You can still submit paper copies, but teams can now choose to register online at the following links:

LAST WEEK TO SUBMIT YOUR FAVORITE RECIPES FOR THE ORHS CHORUS COOKBOOK!

The ORHS Choral Boosters is doing a big fundraiser and we need your help! We are doing a community cookbook, what fun!

We are hoping to get this done and ready for the Winter Concerts and in time for Christmas. What we need from you are recipes. Think of those tried and true ones that are must haves at family occasions. Send in appetizers, side dishes, main dishes, desserts, and any yummy item to include.

Please include your name and ORHS affiliation when sending it in. (such as student, faculty, staff, etc.) Please email them to me at kvacaliuc@gmail.com and include “Recipe” in the subject line.

Recipes will be collected until October 1st. Thanks for your help with this project.

PSAT IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16TH!

If you had a student sign up for the PSAT, the test will be on Wednesday, October 16th during 1st – 5th periods. This is the Wednesday that we return from fall break. Students that take the PSAT eat lunch during 6th.

Secondly, ACT Prep—The fall ACT Prep series with English and Reading practice tests on Wednesday, September 25, in the Amphitheatre, beginning at 2:00 PM sharp. EUROPEAN EXTRAVAGANZA - ONLY 15 SPOTS LEFT!

Only 15 spaces remain for the summer trip, and a deadline is approaching. Students will travel to 5 countries: Italy, the Vatican, Monaco, France and Spain in June of 2020. A $250 discount is currently available if students enroll by October 3. Additionally, 3 college credits from the University of California at San Diego are included in the cost of the trip for those students who wish to participate in the coursework. We will present detail on the dates and the airfare and start to collect individual information on your preferences so we can match you with your partner.

In case you are interested but you are unable to go to Germany next year we would love you to host a German exchange student in the spring. That can be the beginning of a lifelong friendship and you might be able to visit them in Germany at a different time (in case June does not work for you).

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROTC CADETS!

Cadets from the ORHS NJROTC team competed in an Academic competition at Central High School today. Our "B" team placed 4th out of 16 teams and 4th out of 9 schools from East Tennessee. The team was led by Chris Thornburgh. Other members are Amelia Van Berkel, Sam Livesay, Thomas McWaters, Jillian Johnson, and Evalynn Hammer.

Ansel Wilder, ORHS Class of 2020, was inducted the Knoxville Area Urban League's National Achievers Society last Sunday September 15th. Ansel is a three year scholar with NAS.


National Achievers Society (NAS) was established to identify and motivate academically achieving minority high school students and increase the pool of students who are prepared, motivated and qualified for higher education. NAS is open to minority youths in grades 10-12 with a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. This year’s class includes students representing every high school in Knox County, as well as Clinton, Oak Ridge and Jefferson County high schools. NAS scholars and parents participate throughout the school year in weekend activities, projects and initiatives that enhance their cultural, academic and college preparatory experience in a three-year experience from their sophomore through senior year.

Do you have a tennis player at home we don't know about???? The Wildcat & Lady Wildcat Tennis Teams invite prospective and returning players to a Chick-fil-A lunch, Room CS 201 on Tuesday, September 24th, during 5A & 5B. The objective is for prospective players to meet the teams. Returning & prospective Freshmen & Sophomores will be considered GUESTS at the lunch. They do not need to bring any food, unless they have special dietary needs.

CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS!

The Oak Ridge Cross Country team participated in the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational In Louisville, KY this past weekend. There were over 4,000 athletes from 133 schools from 8 states competing at the oldest meet in Kentucky.

The Girls Varsity finished 3rd overall in the varsity division with 120 points. Oak Ridge finishes were:
