Meadow Park News
November 2nd, 2018
Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
Happy November! The month of November at Meadow Park is always an important one. Since starting here, we have consistently had November serve as a month of gratitude, kindness, and caring. Students have traditionally organized a food drive to support the Oregon Food Bank and advisory lessons have focused on what it means to be kind and caring in students’ social and academic lives.
To line up with our theme of gratitude, our MYP Learner Profile focus for the month of November is caring. IB defines caring learners as being considerate towards the needs of others and committed to making a positive difference to others and to the environment. Throughout the month, we will be looking to identify students who exhibit this trait and awarding both PARK tickets and our student of the month accordingly.
Speaking of MYP, last week we asked if families could take the time to do a short survey as part of our IB evaluation. If you haven't already, you can take that HERE. It's very short, but we greatly appreciate your input!
In addition, in early November our first official progress reports come out and they should give families an idea of how their student is progressing at Meadow Park. Next Friday, November 9th, students will not be at school so that staff can put together these reports. Next week, I will provide some more information about what to look for on your student’s report card when they arrive the week of November 12th.
Until then, let’s make it a great week!
Jared Freeman
Principal

During the third week of November, all Beaverton 8th grade students will take the PSAT 8/9. Meadow Park’s testing day that week is November 14th and will include a modified scheduled.
The PSAT 8/9 is an assessment given to eighth-graders that is closely aligned to the SAT®, PSAT/NMSQT®, and PSAT™ 10. It consists of questions in Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and in Math. It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career opportunities.
Your child’s score reports will be available toward the end of January.
For more information on the PSAT 8/9, please go to: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9/inside-the-test or view: PSAT_info_Eng_Span.
We want to hear from YOU - Please fill out our survey!
Last reminder...
Every five years, authorized Middle Years Programme (MYP) schools go through a program evaluation. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program expects authorized schools to continue developing the programme to meet all IB standards and practices. Near the end of each five year evaluation cycle, IB conducts a school visit and provides the school with a report which is then used to refine the school’s action plan.
Meadow Park is currently in our evaluation year and we are preparing for our IB school visit occurring April 11-12 2019. As part of this evaluation cycle, each IB school engages in a self-study, which involves all stakeholders and helps to measure the school’s level of implementation of IB Standards and Practices. The self-study is an opportunity for Meadow Park to reflect on all aspects of MYP. Additionally, the self-study helps the school community identify strengths and areas that require improvement. The self-study as a whole provides a framework for reflection and helps support our staff in refining and sustaining the MYP program at Meadow Park. The staff at Meadow Park has used some of their early release collaboration time to engage in these powerful conversations to move our IB practices forward.
It is vital to Meadow Park’s self-study to engage with our community and include your feedback in our reflection and action plan. Your participation is much appreciated and I hope that you will take the time to complete this short survey by Wednesday, Nov 7, 2018. To complete the parent survey please click the Link
Meadow Park students will have an opportunity to contribute their feedback through a survey in advisory next week.
6th Graders Making Anti-Bullying Commitments
7th Graders Making Anti-Bullying Commitments
8th Graders Making Anti-Bullying Commitments
Anti-bullying lessons delivered to ALL students!
We centered around the effects bullying can have, how we can use our words and actions to make a positive impact, and making school-wide commitments of unity. Grade level counselors, along with two 8th grade leaders, went into all humanities classes to present the lessons. Students explored the effects of bullying, learned about how to make a positive impact at Meadow Park, and created a class unity chain. On that unity chain, every student made a personal commitment to how they are going to help make Meadow Park a safe place for their peers and themselves. We linked our class chains together to form a grade level unity chain. All grade level unity chains will be connected to form one SCHOOL WIDE unity chain. We will be displaying this chain in the cafeteria as a visual reminder of our commitments.
Lessons in classes were a great way to show our PARK pride and continue to live out our mission: We empower all students to be courageous and collaborative learners in their social and academic lives.
The counseling department would like to send a huge thank you to our 8th grade leaders for doing such a great job leading by example. Their contribution provided a student voice and made these lessons come to life. They did an awesome job and we are so proud of them!
Run The Rainbow - THANK YOU, Meadow Park Community!
Dear Meadow Park Families and Students,
We are thrilled to say that the 2018 Jog-a-Thon was a huge success! With your help we exceeded the goal of $20,00 and raised $21,640 for the Meadow Park PTO, thereby clinching the deal that Principal Freeman and Vice Principals Boe and Haskins had to wear unicorn onesies the whole day Wednesday! We even increased our overall fundraising participation by nearly 10%. AWESOME JOB MEADOW PARK!!!!
Don't worry, if your student forgot to turn in their pledges, we will still accept them. Any monies can be turned into the front office.
Our theme this year was Run the Rainbow and it couldn't have been truer than the day of the Jog-A-Thon. While it drizzled, it rained, it even poured on some of you, your spirits stayed bright and bold. What a great day in spite of the weather.
It takes teamwork for a fundraising event like the Jog-A-Thon to be successful, and we would like to thank our huge team of helpers!
Thank you to all our faithful parent volunteers that came to set up canopies, tallied runners, counted laps, directed parking lot traffic, and provided food and snacks for all day volunteers and staff. Thank you to our community guest presenters that volunteered their time speaking to our Meadow Park students when they weren't out running laps (See the list below to view all the presenters who visited on Jog-A-Thon day.).
Thank you to the incredible multi-tasking feats of our Meadow Park front office staff who make everything look so easy. Thank you to our wonderful Principal and Vice Principals who were tremendously collaborative and worked wonders with all of the tricky scheduling logistics. Thank you to all our Meadow Park teachers who participated and encouraged their students to do their best at fundraising and running in the Jog-A-Thon (many teachers even ran along side your students at the Jog-A-Thon!).
One final thank you goes to you, the Meadow Park parents who supported your kids at the Jog-A-Thon. The success of this event is a testament to our great MPMS families and our entire MPMS community. It is a privileged to serve along side you.
Sincerely,
The 2018 Jog-A-Thon Team (Tara Fuller, Leslie Seward, Rachel Pines, and Kim Hawk) & Meadow Park PTO
