Crestwood Public School Term 1 2021
Overview of Teaching & Learning
Programming is the process of selecting and sequencing learning experiences which enable students to engage with syllabus outcomes and develop subject specific skills and knowledge. The process of programming is typically shared and offers an opportunity for collaboration, professional reflection and evaluation.
Programs:
- reflect the needs, interests and abilities of students
- are based on syllabus outcomes and include a variety of teaching, learning and embedded assessment activities, strategies and resources to address the learning needs of all students
- are flexible and dynamic documents that change in response to student learning needs, school context, teacher evaluation and feedback
English
- This term in Writing, students will focus on informative texts that link to the geography unit on sustainability. This unit has been developed to build the students skills in understanding of purpose, audience and language by drafting, proofreading and editing informative texts. Students will use simple and complex sentences, paragraphing, punctuation and grammatical features to support meaning. We will focus on increasing fluency when writing, applying NSW Foundation Style and developing digital publishing skills. Students will be encouraged to explain and reflect on how they structure their writing to achieve intended purposes.
- During Literacy, students will be supported to independently read, view and respond to familiar and challenging texts. They will be encouraged to justify their ideas using a range of skills and strategies. The students will work on identifying literal information in texts and make inferences by linking ideas and asking questions to clarify understandings. The students will explore the structural and grammatical features and purposes for a range of written, visual and multimodal texts.
- In Speaking and Listening, the students will explore a variety of roles when interacting in pairs and groups, attending to different views and responding appropriately. They will be encouraged to use various listening behaviours to gather general ideas and key points from conversations, reports or spoken presentations.
Mathematics
- During Mathematics, students will be working on applying their mental and written strategies to assist with solving problems. They will use technology to investigate mathematical concepts and check their solutions. Students will be encouraged to use appropriate language to explain and check their strategies used when solving problems.
- Students will count, order, read and record numbers of up to five-digits to solve addition and subtraction problems. They will use mental strategies to recall multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and related division facts. Students record, describe and complete number patterns and determine missing numbers in number sentences. Students recognise the properties of odd and even numbers.
- Students will estimate, measure, compare, convert and record length, area, volume, capacity and mass using formal units. They read and record time in hours and minutes, convert between units of time, and solve simple problems involving the duration of time. Students name, describe and sketch particular three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes.

Students engage in the processes of asking questions, predicting outcomes and undertaking guided investigations with increasing independence. They make and record observations, using formal units where appropriate, and compare results with predictions. Students will gain an understanding of how our lives are improved because of advancements in these areas.
HSIE (Geography)
