"A friend is a gift you give yourself."
Upcoming Learning Labs
Art Appreciation will lead us to the fabulous worlds of ballet and the artist Edgar Degas. Becoming ballet dancers, wearing tutus and creating our own ballerina watercolors!
Music Appreciation: Motown and Friendship will be heard throughout learning labs! We will be dancing with partners in practice for our Friendship Dance!
Dramatic Play: Students will be involved in pretend play such as delivering packages and letters, working at the post office, creating letters and postcards to send and designing their very own stamps for mailing.
Writing Workshop: We have some enchanting little visitors here at TerraNichol Academy of The Arts. The Kindness Fairies! Students will be inspired to writing stories about being kind.
Like happiness, our culture tends to view kindness as something abstract, even wishy-washy. But practicing kindness is an important skill in an increasingly collaborative world.
Throughout our school, we focus on principles of kindness, respect and cooperation. In our learning labs, teachers develop curriculum that supports caring behaviors (such as taking care of baby dolls, planting seeds, or cleaning up learning labs). Children are encouraged to take care of our school by participating in jobs, fixing broken objects, and using materials in appropriate respectful ways.
REGULATION THROUGH DISCUSSION
We use gathering times to discuss multiple perspectives to a problem, and engage in processes of negotiation. Often, in learning labs children will write their own set of guidelines and expectations for shared spaces. When children naturally exhibit kind or cooperative behavior, teachers take note of their efforts, and acknowledge the emotional regulation involved.
We have developed kindness principles for framing our interactions with the world.
▪ We take care of ourselves and our earth.
▪ We take care of each other and our pets.
We take care of our materials and the school community.
That's a wrap! Bye, bye January

2016-2017 Registration
Planning Ahead
Enrollment for 2016-2017 School Year
Based on many inquiries to the school about new enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year we will be sending out re-enrollment for our existing students and siblings early in February.
Typically we do this in March but because of the volume of interest for next year and the year after we need to evaluate space in the program for new incoming students. We have families already enrolling and securing their space for 2017-2018.
All forms are in the students folders make sure to check your child's student folder.
Re-enrollment forms and Registration Fee submitted by the deadline will guarantee the student's space for the upcoming school year. DEADLINE FOR EXISTING STUDENTS AND SIBLINGS IS FEBRUARY 16TH . Any registration forms submitted after February 16th will be placed on the waiting list.
KINDERGARTEN/FIRST GRADE REGISTRATION/RE-ENROLLMENT FORMS WILL BE DUE APRIL 1ST. WE ONLY ALLOW FOR 12 SPACES IN THIS PROGRAM.
TerraNichol Academy Junior Kindergarten Program
We are now preparing for open enrollment for our Junior Kindergarten program for school year 2016-2017.
Our Junior Kindergarten Program was developed in 2010 based on the feedback from our parents already attending our program. Parents and Educators sometimes feel preschoolers still need time to grow and mature and feel that they will benefit from an extra year before entering elementary school. Others may just miss the Kindergarten cut off date and this program allows for those students to participate and be challenged in the junior kindergarten program. Admissions and the enrollment process will start February 1st, 2016. The deadline will be April 1st, 2016. We will open up 12 spaces for this program.
To be considered for the program:
1. Registration Form and fee must be submitted to TerraNichol Academy by April 1, 2016. (Applications submitted without the non-refundable registration fee will not be considered.)
2. Parents will renew their parent agreement & contract to make a commitment for the school year.
3. The Students 5th birthday must be before August 1st, 2016 or the student would be eligible for Kindergarten in the public school for the 2016-2017 school year.
4. Parents make a commitment to participate in school- to- home projects taking place throughout the school year.
About the Junior Kindergarten program:
Our teaching team strives to weave the Reggio Emilia approach to Early Childhood Education throughout our content areas for this full-day program. The Reggio approach is known for its small-group work, integrated projects, and hands-on learning, often with natural and recycled materials.
The school is built on a foundation of great educational thinkers and the philosophy of the world class Reggio Emilia schools in Reggio, Italy. Such programming is based on the belief that children and young people are powerful learners who think reflectively and who collaborate with one another as they ask good questions, explore their worlds, build problem solving skills and develop creative skills for twenty-first century careers.
In such a learning environment, the individual strengths and needs of students of all ages will become well known by the staff, enabling them to support and guide each child's unique learning patterns and passions.
TerraNichol Academy of the Arts offers a hands on exploratory kindergarten program. Students engage in math, science, literacy, and social skills through creative, meaningful activities. Learning takes on a more organic approach as teachers build off of each students interests and needs. While respecting the expectations set by the Department of Education curriculum is introduced with a creative, fun, and developmentally appropriate approach. The activities are centered around a common theme creating a cross-curriculum approach to learning. Students also have the opportunity to expand knowledge of arts and music through our unique enrichment classes including art appreciation and music appreciation, Zumba, creative movement, Spanish, yoga, gymnastics, drama, and culinary arts. We feel it is essential to have small work groups. Our classroom ratio for Junior Kindergarten is 1:12.
The Junior Kindergarten runs daily from 9a.m to 3p.m. Extended school day until 5:00 p.m is also available for families who may be in need.
Safe First- School Parking Lot Safety
We are again addressing safety in our school lot after an incident that occurred recently. A parent was backing up and could not see a child playing in the parking lot. Luckily the parent was able to stop in time but as you can imagine it was very upsetting. All parents MUST hold their child or children's’ hand while walking from our front door all the way to your vehicle. Do Not under any circumstances allow your child to walk, even on the sidewalks without holding your hand. Assist your child into your vehicle, be sure that they are safely buckled and never leave your child or children in a car unattended. Under no circumstances should children be playing on the sidewalks, climbing on the rocks or running in our front or side yards. For parents with 2 children we suggest that you hold the youngest in your arms and the hand of the other child. We even suggest that you come in to get lunchboxes nap bags etc. and load your child’s belongings up first and then come back inside and pick up your children. Have a safe, reliable, and consistent plan that will work for you and most importantly ensure the safety of ALL. Remember to guide other family members in your family’s safe pick up routine. Again this is not meant to be a lecture but as we experienced yesterday what seems safe and innocent could result in harm. AS ALWAYS SAFETY IS OUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN!!!!
TerraNichol Academy of The Arts is a eco friendly campus. Please do not leave your vehicle running. The exhaust from vehicles hovers over the playscape.
