Canby School District News
October 30, 2019
I hope you had the opportunity to take part in school conferences earlier this month. Connecting with your student's teachers is an important part of their education. If you did not get a chance to attend conferences, you are welcome to contact your student's teachers at any time to set up a meeting. Understanding your student's progress is crucial to their academic growth.
The district continues to explore a potential facilities bond. On October 17, Patinkin Research Strategies presented results from a recent community poll to our Board of Directors. The Board will decide next week whether to refer a facilities bond to voters in 2020.
Thank you to all of you who took part in our Feedback Sessions for our District Continuous Improvement Plan and the Student Success Act. If you didn't get a chance to attend one of the sessions, please take the online survey. It closes at the end of the week, so please weigh in as soon as you can.
Once we have an opportunity to review all the data, we'll share with you some of the themes we've identified. That feedback will help us this spring in building our plan for the Student Success Act and the additional funds tied to it.
Each of our schools is the process of developing a school climate plan. These plans outline the expectations for all students in a school. You've probably noticed some evidence of this work in your school: positive behavior traits highlighted on bulletin boards, reward systems for positive behavior, and clear behavioral school-wide expectations.
You can help support this effort at home. Make sure you understand the behavioral expectations at your school and help reinforce them at home. Talk to your student about the expectations and positively reinforce when they are met. Encourage respect as you help your student navigate disagreements. Your influence makes a difference and consistency between school and home can help build a positive school climate where disruptions are minimized and learning is maximized.
I appreciate your partnership in your student's education. Together, we can create optimal learning environments where every student can thrive.
Best,
Trip Goodall

Every Day Matters!
Attendance matters for students at all grade levels. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to read at grade level, and to build a strong foundation as they move from preschool and kindergarten to high school.
On the other hand, students who are chronically absent are at risk of falling behind. “Chronically absent” means a student is missing 10% of the school year. It doesn’t matter whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Each day represents lost time.
School districts are now tracking absences more closely. This is not to increase disciplinary actions – it is to identify students who may need increased support getting to school. Every day matters for every child.
Budget Committee Applications Due Friday
