"WE MUST ACCEPT FINITE DISAPPOINTMENT, BUT NEVER LOSE INFINITE HOPE."
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Message from Superintendent Mueller
Good afternoon,
Mandated school closures, per direction from the California Department of Education, necessitated the development of a Distance Learning platform. Creating experiences for our students without training and existing structure was a herculean task. I applaud the efforts of our staff, parents, and students for adjusting to these unprecedented conditions with patience and grace.
As stated in our Friday newsletter, we strongly believe that in order for our district to be positioned to adjust to a variety of uncertainties regarding fall we must prepare for the known.
We know that any/all scenarios related to a return to school this fall will include aspects of Distance Learning. We acknowledge the need to build a robust remote learning structure which will include direct instruction, guided activities, opportunities for interaction, accountability, and assessment.
In an effort to solicit and respond to parent feedback, we are requesting your participation in the following ThoughtExchange: Based off of your Distance Learning experience, what do we need to consider to ensure student success in remote learning moving forward?
These structures will take time for us to develop. We will need to do this together as a team. Sharing your experience will be instrumental as we develop new structures.
In order to plan effectively, we will end our current Distance Learning offerings on May 29th and transition to a ‘Springboard to Summer’ enrichment model for our students, beginning June 1st. We are actively creating this platform, in partnership with staff, parents, and community organizations, and will share it by Memorial Day. While teacher-led instruction will conclude at the end of May, we will provide additional resources for families interested in continuing parent-led enrichment and instruction. Students working to remediate grades for specific classes will still be able to do so in collaboration with their teacher through the end of the regularly calendared school year.
We want all of our students back in our classrooms as soon as possible. We will never compromise the health and safety of our staff or students, and will continue responding to direction from public health officials to determine next steps. Time together in June to plan for a smooth and successful return in August is essential.
Please participate in our ThoughtExchange to share and respond to ideas. Your perspective is invaluable and will help define our course of action for the Fall.
