STATE and NATIONAL Bound Brickies!

It is an exciting week in the School City of Hobart while Bruce heads off to STATE in Cross-Country and our JROTC Raiders head down to Georgia for NATIONALS!

Bruce took to the semi-state course at New Prairie and landed 1 spot shy of qualifications. After a somewhat agonizing weekend it was decided by the IHSAA that his time did in fact earn him a spot at STATE! He has been working hard year round for this opportunity and we know he will shine! Best of luck, Bruce!

Then there is our amazing JROTC Raiders who attended the State competition and tore it up - walking away with the CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE! They competed against many top teams in the state and are humbly making their way to Georgia to compete in the NATIONALS. There are 3,000 raider teams in the nation and only 90 attend the National Competition in Georgia. We are SO PROUD of our Bricks and had them proudly walk through the halls of our schools while the Brickies sent them off with Brickie Pride! There National Competition is taking place November 1st - 3rd so keep an eye on the School City of Hobart Facebook and Twitter pages for the results! Best of luck, Bricks!

Brickies Canoe on Lake George!

It may be snowing now, but earlier this month is was beautiful and sunny and our Brickies were able to get out on our beautiful Lake George! Thanks to the Wilderness Inquiry and Dunes Learning Center some of our Brickies gathered at Pavese Park where they learned about our local plants, insects, and waters. Then topped it off with a canoe trip around the lake! Some had never experienced canoeing before and thought it was so neat seeing Hobart from a different perspective. All the Brickies enjoyed the experience and hope to get back out on the Lake in the Spring! Thanks to all involved in planning this and making this experience possible for our students.

We are Building Healthy Brickies!

Earlier this month our Elementary Brickies were out at their schools running 1/2 mile races and enjoying the sunshine! Coach and Teacher Betty Funkhouser does a great job encouraging our Brickies to exercise and eat healthy and her positive attitude radiates! The students adore her and enjoy the bi-annual challenge of the half-mile run. While running the course, parent volunteers were along the side lines cheering them on and motivating them all the way to the end. There they enjoyed a snack and water while cheering for the rest of their classmates. Thanks to everyone who came together to make this happen and great job to all of our Elementary Brickies! #GoBricks

Joan Martin's New Club - Makers Club!

It has been nothing but fun, learning, imagination, engineering, designing, redesigning, and testing in the new club at Joan Martin Elementary and our Brickies are LOVING it! Students are given a challenge and are able to use the supplies in front of them and their imagination to design, build, and test their inventions.

They started with the traditional airplane challenge where they designed their paper airplane and threw it to see whose would go the farthest. Then they had the cardboard challenge where they randomly chose a city building which they designed and built with cardboard and tape. After all were complete they put it all together and created Cardboard City! It turned out amazing!

Most recently they had the Cable Car Challenge and designed and built a "car" that would then have to be powered down a string with the air from a balloon. After everyone had a first attempt they were able to go back to the drawing board and tweak their design for further travel. The second round was better and the students were really enjoying the challenge.

Their next challenge is to take crayons do a crayon recycling make and take project. They started with a whole bucket of Joan Martin’s students’ discarded crayons and took the wrappers off. We cannot wait to see how this turns out! Outstanding job, Brickies! I know we have some future inventors in our District!

Nurse's Corner for November!

Flu - Don’t Waste Fall By Being Sick. Get A Flu Shot! It’s Super Quick! Don’t forget to get your flu shot and stay protected. Contact your healthcare provider or make an appointment at our Brickie Clinic 219-945-9383.

Vaccinations - All students should be up to date on their vaccinations. Indiana state law requires you to have up to date immunizations. If you have any questions or concerns about the new school year 2019-20 requirements, please contact your school nurse. Last and final Deadline to turn in vaccinations is November 11, 2019. After this date, unless you have provided a written statement with an appointment date, your child will be excluded from school for 5 days. After the 5 exclusion days we will have no other choice, but to go through an expulsion procedure for your child.

Health Conditions - If your student has a specific health condition or needs special care during the school day such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform your school nurse and provide your nurse with a care plan. Individual health care plans help keep your student safe and healthy.

Sick students - Please keep all sick children home from school- this includes fever greater than 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea. If you are unsure please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice.

Head Lice - It’s that time of year where our students break out their coats, scarves and hats. Please encourage your child not to share such items as hats, scarves, brushes or any personal items. Lice is not a danger to your child’s health, it is simply an annoying problem that comes around this time of year, so no need to panic. Please know that anyone and everyone can get lice. Getting lice has nothing to do with you being clean or dirty, it only has to do with the fact that you are human. It is very important to check your family for lice this time of year regularly. If you find any live lice or eggs, it is absolutely necessary to treat each “infected” person, but more importantly, YOU MUST notify the school so that we can effectively and confidentially assist you with monitoring. The school nurse can assist you with proper treatment options as well as identify and demonstrate for you what to do.

CLOTHING - Please make sure your student has an extra change of clothing in his/her backpack in case needed for unseen circumstances that may arise during the school day. Also, remember it is getting colder so please bring pants and long shirts to replace the shorts and t-shirts.

If you have any questions, please call your school nurse or visit our school web page at: http://www.hobart.k12.in.us for more information on student health, school forms, and other helpful links
