OPERATION BARBAROSSA

Operation Barbarossa was the largest invasion in the second word war. The operation was given a go on June 22nd 1941 sending four million soldiers and six hundred thousand motor vehicles

THE INVASION

The invasion started June 22nd with many successful attacks across the Russian front. Russia suffering major losses of man power and supplies from the Germans for the time being

MAIN FOCUS OF THE GERMANS

On July 3, Hitler finally gave the go-ahead for the Panzers to resume their drive east after the infantry divisions had caught up. However, a rainstorm typical of Russian summers slowed their progress and Russian defenses also stiffened. The delays gave the Soviets time to organize for a massive counterattack against Army Group Center. The ultimate objective of Army Group Center was the city of Smolensk, which commanded the road to Moscow.

REASONS FOR INVASIONS

Germany's reason to invade was for the supplies such as food, steel, coal and land to extend Germany into a stronger empire. With Germany planing the invasion as early as 1940 it was quite clear there was potential for the invasion of russia

THE FALL OF OPERATION BARBAROSSA

By December 1941 Germany was at the foot of Moscow, laying siege to the city. But by the time the General winter hit the Germans were to deep into Russian territory to retreat fast enough. By the end of December 775,000 German soldiers had died from the invasion with 6,000,000 soviet soldiers dead or injured fighting for moscow marking the failure of operation barbarossa
