Roads from the 1800's compared to roads taday


  • Roads were made from dirt and stone.
  • One lane with wooden guardrails
  • Used sand and mud to compact
  • Was very bumpy and rough


  • Multiple lanes for cars
  • Uses stone and rock for a strong base
  • Rebar and then concrete finish of the road
  • Paint divides the road

Turnpikes and Corduroy Roads

  • Built by private companies
  • Tolls were used to fund the roads
  • Best road was Lancaster turnpike
  • The road was built with stone and gravel which made it drain well
  • The road was topped with smooth stones for a smooth ride
