1800's
- Roads were made from dirt and stone.
- One lane with wooden guardrails
- Used sand and mud to compact
- Was very bumpy and rough
Today
- Multiple lanes for cars
- Uses stone and rock for a strong base
- Rebar and then concrete finish of the road
- Paint divides the road
Turnpikes and Corduroy Roads
- Built by private companies
- Tolls were used to fund the roads
- Best road was Lancaster turnpike
- The road was built with stone and gravel which made it drain well
- The road was topped with smooth stones for a smooth ride
