Principal's Message
Today is the International Day of Acceptance. I shared this information on our announcements this morning, since it fits so well with our HOWL vision.
What is IDOA?
The International Day of Acceptance, celebrated every January 20th, is a day dedicated to social acceptance of disability and to honor the late Annie Hopkins, founder of 3E Love and creator of the International Symbol of Acceptance.
Meet Our Late Founder Annie
Annie Hopkins (1984-2009) was advocate, entrepreneur, artist, and student, whose vibrant spirit is 3E Love's guiding light. Her life was a beautiful demonstration on what is possible when you love life.
"3E Love is more than living disabled but is simply about living. Everyone has the freedom to live their life. We challenge you to do what you love because you'll meet some amazing people along the way, and that, our friends, is how you'll enjoy this ride that 3E Love calls life. Embrace diversity. Educate your community. Empower each other. Love life."
Acceptance is created from an Empowered movement that Educates others to Embrace diversity and Love Life by seeing beyond abilities. You have a role in our culture and life. You can start the change by demonstrating acceptance and showing the world that you embrace people of all abilities. Embrace. Educate. Empower. Love Life.
Post a #DayOfAcceptance photo and tell your friends what acceptance means to you.

Binders, folders, and agenda books are all tools for organization. What about backpacks?
The backpack is the first organizational tool that students will be introduced to, and is where all other organizational tools are stored when transporting materials to and from school. Taking ownership of this tool is essential so students understand how the backpack aides in their success each day. Teaching students to take accountability for their backpack creates independence so that the shift of responsibility is no them, rather than on you, the parent or guardian.
At Home: Take a look at your child's backpack. Ask them how it is organized and if they feel the current organization works for them. Are papers properly placed in folders or binders? Are smaller items stored in the front pocket? Has it been cleaned out recently? Be sure to guide your child as s/he cleans it out, as opposed to doing it for them. We are trying to build those organizational skills and foster independence, so it's important for your child to practice.
Kindergarten Registration
If you will have an incoming Kindergarten student this fall at Lakewood Creek (must be 5 by September 1, 2023), registration for them is Monday, February 6 at the District Office across from OHS (walk in anytime 9:30-12:30 or 3:30-7:00 pm). Be sure to register them on that date or as soon as possible after so our school has a good idea for enrollment and number of Kindergarten classes that will be needed well in advance of the school year.
Details and what you need to bring for paperwork and forms are at the link below. You won't have to pay any fees at registration. The will be sent to you later via PushCoin before school starts. Please share with other parents you may know who have incoming Kindergarten students.
Note that if you currently have a Brokaw (or satellite site) student, you don't have to go through this process; they are already registered in the district.
Registration takes place at Central Registration located at 4175 Route 71 (Door #2).

Early Childhood Make Up Days
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
This week and next, your child should learn how to:
- Kindergarten: be able to give at least one example of a kind act, and to give at least one reason why they think kind acts are important.
- 1st Grade: be able to describe how kind acts can help people feel good, and will be able to demonstrate two kind acts: asking, “Are you okay?” and offering their company.
- 2nd Grade: be able to describe how empathy leads to an act of kindness in a given scenario, and will be able to describe how empathy has led them to show kindness to others.
- 3rd Grade: be able to identify kind acts that can build a new friendship, and will be able to identify kind acts that can make existing friendships stronger.
- 4th Grade: be able to explain different points of view presented in a given situation, and will be able to generate questions a person could ask to better understand someone’s point of view when it’s hard to empathize.
- 5th Grade: be able to describe how people used empathy to identify a community problem and a way to address it, and will be able to use empathy to identify problems in their community and the people affected.

Wednesday, February 1st is Global School Play Day. The emphasis of the day is to honor the value of unstructured play time. Again, many of our classes will be celebrating. Watch for information from your child's teacher.
Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
