Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! We can’t wait to welcome back our students in a few short weeks! Thank you for submitting your preference for in-person or virtual learning. I understand that the decision was not an easy one. We are committed to every child in our district, to ensure they receive an excellent education. Our district is in the process of reorganizing classrooms for the next school year. We will communicate classroom assignments, as soon as they become available.
The construction of our main office is almost complete. I will communicate with families when our office staff returns to the building. At this time, we are at Winston Campus Elementary, should you need in-person assistance.
There will be several changes this upcoming year for in-person learning.
Social Distancing
Classrooms will be reconfigured to allow for social distancing. Desks will be spaced apart from each other and facing forward. Students will be asked to use “airplane arms” during their time at school to keep everyone safe. Our arrival, lunch/recess, and dismissal schedules will be adjusted to accommodate for social distancing. During arrival, buses will be unloaded one at a time and students will be entering the building in two locations. Walkers and car riders will enter at Door 4. During the lunch hour, students will eat in their classrooms and we will stagger eating time within each room to provide a larger distance between students, while their masks are removed. During recess, we will create zones on our field. Classes will remain together on the field. Masks may be removed outside.
Face Coverings
Students will be required to wear face coverings at school. Face coverings must cover a student’s nose and mouth. A face shield may not be a replacement for a mask, but can be worn in addition to the mask. We kindly ask families to send an extra face mask to school, in case a mask needs to be replaced during the day.
Symptom Screening
Students will be temperature checked daily. We are working diligently to ensure a safe learning environment. Our district is in the process of finalizing the procedures for daily symptoms and temperature screenings.
Supplies
School supply kits that were ordered through our PTA will be delivered to classrooms for the first day of school. Supplies will remain with each student, as we can not have shared supply bins this year. Student backpacks will remain with students and will be hung on the back of student’s chairs. Lockers will not be used this year. We kindly ask that parents do not send in a surplus of supplies. Please keep extra items at home and send them to school with your child when they need them. Supplies will be stored in your child’s desk. Students may have their own hand sanitizer in school with them. Student supply lists for in-person learning can be found on our website. Central Road Student Supplies
The district is looking into making adjustments to supply lists for virtual learning cohorts. If you ordered supplies from our PTA, a distribution schedule will be shared after the supplies are delivered.
Large Gatherings
We are permitted to hold gatherings of up to 50 people. At this time, our Meet the Teacher and Curriculum Night will be held virtually. Details on these events will be shared with families soon. Assemblies and school evening events may not be held at this time. Bus capacity will be reduced to allow for social distancing.
Cleaning and Disinfecting
Cleaning and disinfection of areas within the building protocols have been modified to keep our students and staff safe. We are increasing staffing of our custodial staff during the day. Classrooms, bathrooms, and high touch surfaces will be cleaned during the school day, as well as after school. Hand sanitizing stations will be added to building entrances. Hand sanitizer will be available for students in each classroom. Hand-washing schedules will be created for classrooms.
Virtual Learning
We are committed to making enhancements in the virtual classroom. This fall, students enrolled in virtual learning will be engaged in direct instruction and assignments through Google Classroom or SeeSaw.
Learning online is different than learning in a classroom. There are things to consider like the age level of students, cognitive load, and content.
The following time allocations are research-based recommendations and are subject to change based on planning and feedback from stakeholders.
Parents can anticipate the following schedules:
PreK-K
Teacher-led instruction (may include whole group, small group or independent instruction): 60-90 minutes
Learning supplemental activities (self-paced activities): 90 minutes
1-3
Teacher-led instruction (may include whole group, small group or independent instruction): 75-100 minutes
Learning supplemental activities (self-paced activities): 120 minutes
4-6
Teacher-led instruction (may include whole group, small group or independent instruction): 90-120 minutes
Learning supplemental activities (self-paced activities): 150 minutes
Additional reopening information is available on the district Return to Learn Website.
Thank you for your partnership!
Warmly,
Patti Van Winkle
