PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Our year is off and running. The students are learning expectations and practicing them all throughout the school. Teachers and staff are catching kids following expectations and rewarding them with PAWS. The PAWS raffle buckets have started and kids are earning rewards like sitting in the principal's chair for the day and an extra class recess.
The office is busy preparing for Grandparent's Day. Be sure you talk to grandma and grandpa to see if they will be attending our big event this year. We love having them all visit. So many smiling faces.
Please be sure that you are communicating with your child's teacher about any questions you have. Ask about classwork or behavior...stay informed. We are here to work together to educate your child.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have about your child or school.
Mrs. Michalski

Notes from the Office
Online Registration: Remember to take a few minutes and update your information through our online registration. This replaces the paper forms that you have filled out in previous years. If you do not have your login or password to access Skyward/Family Access, please call the school office at 826-5819.
Grandparent’s Day is just around the corner. Once again this year each grade will have a specific time set up for classroom visits and lunch. This has been a great help in making the day go smoothly for everyone. Grandparents should wait in the lobby or library. They will be escorted to the proper classroom at the appropriate time. Grandparents with more than one grandchild, who have extra time between room visits are welcome to stop in the library to read a paper or even go out for recess!
A chairperson for our Scholastic Book Fair will be in the lobby on Grandparent’s Day selling gift certificates to use on the day of the Book Fair, November 2nd. With so many titles to choose from, your grandchild will be thrilled with your gift of a new book or two, on you! The certificates can be purchased by check or cash only made out to Abrams CPTO.

Activities:
Global Read Aloud - Once again, our schools are participating in this worldwide program to unite readers around the globe. This year's featured authors are: Patrick Fischer and his book The Wild Robot and author Mem Fox and her books, Koala Lou, Possum Magic, Wherever You Are, Tough Boris and Hattie and the Fox. Students will get a chance to hear these stories and connect with other children around the globe who are reading these same titles.
Reminders:
Please help your children remember that when they checkout library materials, they need to be responsible.
- If an item is lost or damaged, the item must be paid for.
- If there is an extreme financial problem, please contact the District Librarian, Mrs. Stuiber at penelope.stuiber@of-ps.org
- To protect items, send library books in a plastic bag inside the backpack to protect from food or water spills or other damage.
- Remind students to immediately report any damage to books and to keep them away from pets and younger siblings.
- Books are kept for 1 week at a time and may be renewed on an as needed basis. No late fees are charged, however, students may not check out other items if overdue items are not returned or renewed. The student must have the book in hand in order to renew the book.
- Students in grades 4K & 5K may take out 1 item at a time, and students in grades 1 -5 may take out up to 3 items.

Medication: If your child is going to bring medication to school, this includes Tylenol, ibuprofen, antacids, cold medicine, etc.…. please remember to fill out the medication consent form in the office. This helps the office staff know when to distribute the medicine and the dosage needed for that child. Thanks!
Date Change for FREE Flu Shots
Oconto County Public Health will visit Abrams Elementary School on Monday 10/16/17 to offer FREE flu shots to all students in Early Childhood (EC)-5th grade.
If your child did not bring the consent forms home for the FREE flu shots, go to www.ocph.info to download a form and find more information on the flu shot.
CDC recommends a flu shot for everyone 6 months and older. Flu is not just a bad cold; it’s a serious illness that can lead to pneumonia and other complications. The symptoms can last for up to two weeks and include: fever, cough, sore throat, headache, severe body aches, chills, runny or stuffy nose, extreme exhaustion, and sometimes in children diarrhea and vomiting. While your child may be nervous to receive a shot at school, Oconto County Public Health staff will work together to make your child as comfortable as possible.
Getting the flu shot every year is your best protection against the flu! You can also stay healthy by washing your hands frequently, covering your cough and staying home when you are sick. Please call Oconto County Public Health with questions at 920-834-7000.

Raising a Thinking Child Series
Words adults use with children set the stage for a child to think and independently solve problems. Children need practice thinking of alternatives and developing their problem solving skills. Adults can develop and practice these skills at the Raising a Thinking Child Workshop.
If you have a 4-7 year old and have experienced any of the following: Temper tantrums, difficulty making or keeping friends, impatience or interrupting, not listening, (all common, everyday problems with children)…“The Raising a Thinking Child” program may be just right for you!
This workshop series will help you guide your children to solve problems through communicating with your child. Shy children become more assertive, and impulsive children learn the ability to cope with frustration with this approach.
Learn more about program and see what past participants have said about it on UW-Extension website below (“Building Oconto County Children’s Critical Thinking Skills for 21st Century Success)”.
The 7 week series will meet Oct. 3 thru Nov. 14 on Tuesday evenings (except 10/31-will be held on Mon. 10/30) at Oconto Elementary School with an optional Free family dinner at 5:00pm each week. Workshop will be from 5:30-6:30 pm. Each week.
Please Register by Sept. 26 by email barb.truttman@ces.uwex.edu or a Brochure is available at: http://oconto.uwex.edu . Free childcare will be provided for children of participants.
