JUST THE FACTS!
…… About ADHD
ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – is the most common mental health issue
affecting children in the United States. While all kids sometimes have trouble listening,
focusing, paying attention or sitting still, kids with ADHD have trouble with these things almost all the time. And it’s not their fault. The brain of someone with ADHD has a hard time slowing down and that can interfere with schoolwork or even with interactions with family and friends.
Some of the signs of ADHD include:
- Can’t focus or pay attention
- Fidgety or restless
- Trouble listening
- Easily distracted or may seem absent-minded
- Disorganized or often lose things
- Rush through schoolwork causing someone to make careless mistakes
- Calling out in class
- Difficulty controlling behavior /getting into trouble
- Difficulty getting along with others
There are no blood tests to tell if you or someone you know has ADHD but a doctor can usually make that diagnosis after gathering information from many sources, including the student, parents and teachers. And if it is determined that someone does have ADHD, there are ways to help to decrease the impact ADHD may be having. Doctors, parents and teachers can all work together to come up with a plan to help a student overcome any obstacles to success that ADHD may put in the way.
