General News
Weather-Related School Closing Information
As we head into winter, we want to remind parents of the ways District 204 announces weather-related school closing information. The announcement is made by 6 a.m. through the following:
- Information is posted first by @ipsd204 on Twitter and at www.ipsd.org
- Connect-ED phone call to parents/guardians
- Local television and radio stations
- Emergency Closing Center's website
We will only announce when schools are closed. If schools are not closed, it is ultimately the responsibility of parents to decide if conditions safely allow for their children to attend school. If children are kept home due to weather conditions, parents must call the school to report the excused absence.
District 204 follows a plan whenever there is consideration of a school closing due to weather conditions. You can read more about how the district makes the decision to close school at Winter Weather Guidelines.
5Essentials Survey for Students
Once again this year, middle and high school students across Illinois have the opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This is the sixth year the Illinois State Board of Education will implement this survey across the state. This survey is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chicago. It asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans.
Student participants will be required to log-in using their State ID and birthdate in order to complete the survey. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree homework assignments help them learn the course material.
Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found on the Illinois 5Essentials website (https://Illinois.5-essentials.org).
Gregory students will be participating in the survey on Friday, December 15th during their Exploratory classes. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.
5Essentials Survey Now Open for Parents
Teachers, parents, middle and high school students across Illinois have the opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey was designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child's school. As a parent, your voice is essential to help us understand the conditions at your child's school and guide improvement.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by the University of Chicago, on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. The state will provide survey results for individual schools only if a school has at least 20 percent of parents take the survey. If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school. You may also complete the survey more than once if you have more than one child in the same school. All survey responses will be kept confidential. University of Chicago asks parents for an email address when they begin the survey only for the purpose of sending a confirmation once the survey is completed. University of Chicago will never connect your identity and survey responses to you or your child or share the information with your school, the district or the Illinois State Board of Education.
To take this short survey:
1. Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/login/.
2. Type and then select Dupage as District 204's County location. This is the county associated with the district, not the location of an individual school.
3. Type your school's name into the School field and then select your school.
Power of Choice - December Parent Use Your Power
Developing Emotional Awareness in Adolescents
During adolescence, our children begin to master the emotional skills that allow them to manage stress and become able to effectively relate to others. Development of these skills will allow our children to succeed in both their personal and professional lives now and into adulthood. Some development experts believe that strong emotional awareness is a greater indicator of an individual’s success later in life than IQ. This month’s newsletter will assist you as you guide your child toward mastering their emotional awareness.
Emotions are an important part of human nature…emotions give us information about what we’re experiencing and help us know how to react. By learning to recognize, identify and talk about our emotions, we can take control of those emotions and use them to respond appropriately. Strengthen your families’ emotional awareness with this month’s PowerTalk- Emotional Awareness Workout.
