What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts/Reading/Writing: Poetry is our focus for the next 4 weeks. We promise no Shakespeare...no simple prose fit for children that they can read it. This is a great way to practice fluency and accuracy in reading. We will also be writing poetry as well. We will be work on rhyme, alliteration and rhythm. We will also be checking for understand of prose and making inferences. We will be checking to see if we can draw a conclusion on what the author wanted us to learn from their prose. Students will be asked to write poetic prose in addition to reading poetry. You may want to look at some fun books at home -like Shel Silverstein or Jack Prelutsky.
Poetry is amazing-it can help foster the text fluency, vocabulary growth and comprehension.
Social Studies-As we explore citizenship-look exploring American symbols, mottoes and patriotic customs. We are going to start with symbols this week. The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, The White House, The Liberty Bell. We will start a project base learning opportunity with the students.
Spelling/Words Their Way:
We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words for List 25 are find, only, our, better, hold. We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. We will be working on recall and review of all the list from 1 to 25. Your child should be able to read and spell over 100 of the word on the lists. There is always room for more vocabulary and word knowledge growth.
Word Their Way sorts will be coming home on Monday.
Our Silver Group is working on a picture sort for word starting with letters JQ and W
Our White Group is working on digraphs cr, cl, fr, gl and gr
Our Black Group is working on ending rimes- -ack, -ick, -ock, -uck
Our Blue Group is working on vowel clusters- or, ore, oar
The Black and Blue groups will be tested on writing 10 words from the sort. Please practice writing the sorts at home, as well as ,moving the pieces. Student must perform their very best at both parts- the sort and written test.
Math:We are beginning a new unit in mathematics called Blocks and Boxes. This second geometry unit focuses on 3-D shapes. Students describe, compare, build with, and represent Geoblocks—a set of related three-dimensional wooden blocks that includes cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids. They also explore the relationship between 3-D shapes and 2-D shapes as they build 3-D boxes from 2-D index cards, search for the 3-D block shown in a 2-D photograph, and attempt to draw a Geoblock building (or build one), given a 2-D drawing. Students also use the Geoblocks to construct buildings and then write directions for routes around their class town (e.g., Go north one block, turn east, and go east two blocks.).
Science: We will be continuing our unit on the characteristics and needs of plants and animals. In this unit we will be studying and investigation the difference between living and non-living things based on their basic needs and ability to produce offspring. We will investigate how the characteristics of an animal are related to where it lives, how it moves and what it eats. We will also be learning how to identify and compare parts of plants.
