Thank you for all you do!
We know we can't do this without your support. Thank you for all you are doing at home to promote a positive learning environment.
What to do if my child is STUCK
Questions get questions
Is this right?
- (If the answer is right OR wrong) What makes you think this is true? What proof do you have that this makes sense?
What do I do?
- Can you read the directions out loud to me (or listen to the directions again)?
- What do you think you need to do?
I don't get it OR It's too hard...
Questions to jump-start student thinking:
- What DO you know? Try reading it again for some clues.
- What does that information tell you?
- What do you think you need to do next? Why do you think that?
Sometimes a break is all you need. When things get too frustrating, that's ok, take a break, try again later.
If all else fails, Math shouldn't bring tears. Reach out to your child's teacher for help and strategies when things get too hard.
Manipulatives are your friend!
What to try:
- Fingers are attached to you for a reason - they are a permanent math manipulative you can use over and over again. Relate numbers to groups of 5s and 10s whenever you can!
- Gather materials - collect dolls, erasers, game chips, cereal, candy, or toys, use these to act out different math problems. Candy also makes a great incentive!
- Gather experiences - play board games, go on road trips, take a nature walk, and cook. Talk about the activity and all the math you notice along the way! Problems are easiest to solve if the child can relate to them.

Just remember - there is no such thing as a Math Brain. We all think about numbers differently and that is something to celebrate! Another thing to celebrate is a mistake. Your brain works harder when you make a mistake, don't believe me? Check out Jo Boaler and her work with math and brain science in the video below.
