MI BACKPACK HOME TESTS
MI Backpack Home Tests are available
An At-Home COVID-19 Testing Pilot Program for K–12 Settings
ENROLL IN PROGRAM
What?
MI Backpack Home Tests is a voluntary program offered by MDHHS for Michigan K–12 students, educators, staff, and their families who want an extra layer of protection against COVID-19. Every person enrolled in the program will receive one at-home COVID-19 test “kit,” which includes 2 at-home tests. MDHHS will provide the kits and educational materials, and schools will distribute the kits to students and staff who choose to enroll. There is no obligation to participate.
Who?
K–12 students, teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, teaching aides, and non-instructional staff are all eligible to opt into this program through their participating school or district.
Where?
Please note, test kits will be distributed starting the week of May 16, 2022, to students and staff who enroll in the program. Please read the process for distribution of the kits below:
Survey Completed and submitted (This is an Opt-In only program)
Office Staff will be notified of Enrollment (kits will not be given if not on enrollment list).
Office Staff will distribute test kits as follows:
- Elementary - on Friday’s to classroom teachers to place in backpacks
Middle School - Every Thursday students may pick up their tests from the main office during their 6th Hour
High School - Every Thursday students may pick up their test from the main office during 3rd Hour
Participants will then be able to test themselves, or other family members right at home.
Why?
Layering prevention measures, like masking, testing, distancing, and ventilation, help create a safer environment for learning and keep kids, staff, and families safer. This pilot program offers one more tool—at-home testing—to help create that environment.
Any staff member or student that has symptoms of COVID-19 should still be isolated at home. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes.

HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR VACCINATION RECORDS
How to upload student vaccine records
Parents and guardians can upload their student's COVID vaccine card using the MiStar Parent Portal by following the directions linked here. According to quarantine guidelines from the Wayne County Health Department, any student who is fully vaccinated will not be required to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact to a COVID positive individual. Uploading your student’s vaccine card will help the district quickly identify those students who will not be required to quarantine. Thank you for doing this once the shots are complete!
