From The Principal:
Wow!!!!!! What a fantastic week at Shades Mountain!!!!!!!!! I really do not know where to begin. On Wednesday, SMES students invaded Helena Hollow. The Pumpkin Patch made for a special day. Our teachers saved a bunch of awesomeness for Friday. Today was filled with fun activities. Our students experienced Rock Day, Bat Day, and the Haunted Hallway filled with fog.
We finished off the afternoon with a couple of Fun Run Pep Rallies to get everyone excited about supporting the PTO Fundraiser. The students left the building all fired up for the weekend. You're welcome. :)
Selfishly, my favorite part of the day was celebrating Principal Appreciation Day. Teachers, staff, and students all came to school today dressed in ties to honor me. I think the only person without a tie on this morning was me...but I quickly remedied that faux pas. It was energizing to feel loved by so many people. Truthfully, I do not need an appreciation day to feel that way. Every day this place fills my cup with joy. It is a real blessing to get to come to this wonderful school daily.
None of these cool events occur without the help of wonderful parents like you. You showed up and unselfishly served students and teachers all week. These experiences make lasting memories for our students and they are great "hand's on" learning experiences. I cannot say thank you enough for supporting our school.
Speaking of support, the PTO Fun Run Fundraiser is off to an incredible start. The generous donation pledges are pouring in. So far, the forecast looks like Friday is going to be great Fun Run weather. You can keep praying for a pleasant forecast please.
Next week is Red Ribbon Week and we know it will be an awesome experience. Be sure and have your student ready for "dress up" days. We will also be participating in Read For The Record and the Math-O-Treat activity. It sounds like another great week coming up at Shades Mountain.
Not changing this paragraph!!! Please sit down with our students each day and talk about school. Ask them about what they are learning. Look over their work. Let them teach you the lessons of the day. Read with them. Statistics show that even a few minutes of parent reinforcement each evening makes a huge difference in their academic trajectory. It is evident to me how much you love your children so I am certain that you are already doing this. I just want to remind you to keep up the good work. It matters.
I know that you are anxious to eat lunch in our fabulous cafeteria but I am going to ask you to bear with us a few days more. I want to get our students ready and I am still waiting for approval to open up our cafeteria to outside visitors. As soon as I get the greenlight, I will send out an invite.
One last thing...enjoy these times. The weather is going to be beautiful this weekend. Get out in it with your family. My children are all grown so my days of playing in the park, jumping in piles of leaves, or carving a autumn pumpkin as a family are behind me. I should have treasured those times more. Leave the dishes, fold the laundry later, unplug the video console and go enjoy your family. God gave you a great tribe and a perfect weekend to savor. Do not miss out on it.
Have a wonderful weekend.

CARPOOL
Please practice having your child get in and out of the car by him or herself. This may include buckling and unbuckling seat belts and getting in and out of the vehicle independently. Please have students gather all their materials (backpack, lunchbox, jacket, etc.) so that they can quickly get out of the car in the morning. GIFTED EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Gifted/enrichment students are those who perform at or who have demonstrated the potential to perform at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regular school program. Students possessing these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
Teachers, counselors, administrators, parents/guardians, peers, self, or any other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities may refer a student. Additionally, all second grade students will be observed as potential gifted referrals using a gifted behavior checklist.
For each student referred, information is gathered in the areas of Aptitude, Characteristics, and Performance. The information is entered on a matrix where points are assigned according to established criteria. The total number of points earned determines if the student qualifies for gifted services.
To make a referral, contact our enrichment teacher, Mrs. Nancy McGowan, at nmcgowan@hoover.k12.al.us.
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
