Summary of The Medicine Bag
A boy named Martin lives in Iowa. His grandfather who is part of Sioux tribe in South Dakota comes to visit because he is sick and dying. He wants to give Martin the medicine bag before he dies. At first Martin is worried what his friends will think of his grandfather, but later finds that his friends look up to his grandfather.
Characters in the story
Martin
Martin is the main character. The story is told from his point of view. This character is very conscience of what his friends will think of his grandfather. At first, Martin was not excited about his Grandfather's visit, but that soon changed.
Joe Iron Shell
Joe Iron Shell is Martin's grandfather. This character is dying so he comes to Iowa to give his grandson the medicine bag before he is gone. This character is part of the Sioux tribe.
Cheryl
Cheryl is Martin's younger sister. She is not mentioned much in the story, but we felt she had an important part. She was excited about grandfather's visit and always brought her friends over to meet him. Martin was the complete opposite of her.
Literary devices used in the Story
Imagery: (pg. 286) ...he walked in the middle of the street. That's when all the little kids and dogs started following him.
Simile: (pg 283)Grandpa wasn't tall and stately like T.V Indians.
Onomatopoeia: (pg 284) "yippy"poodles.
Critiques of the Story
We thought this was a great story. We would recommend it for children of any age. It teaches them that you shouldn't care what other people think about you or your family. We thought this story had very good descriptive words and did a great job letting readers know what the characters were thinking.
