Shadowing
A data collection tool for observation and diagnosis.
Purpose & Focus
Used to collect data on a targeted student. This includes student comments, movements, conduct, demeanor, & reactions as they occur and change during the lesson.
It is essential to get or create a seating chart prior to collecting shadowing data. Work with the Developing Educator to collaboratively decide upon where to place yourself for the observation and what process will be used to record student physical and verbal behaviors.
Shadowing Sample
Notice, in the sample below, that the time is noted and each physical and verbal action is captured and described.
Shadowing Data Collection in the Virtual Environment
If observing a Developing Educator's lesson in a virtual environment, Shadowing data can still be captured. Consider the following:
- Tracking student interactions in a Canvas course (discussion boards, quiz responses, comments on documents)
- Observing a Big Blue Button (Conferences) or Teams lesson and recording a targeted students' verbal and physical behaviors
