Grade Level Updates
Year 1 / 6th Grade
Social Studies: Julius Caesar! Octavian! Mark Antony! Cleopatra! Next week, our Rome unit will be full of drama and intrigue as we learn about these important people & the events associated with them. Our learning activities will include close reading, notes, discussion, and a What Do You Think? class activity. We will also have a Starbucks Mode day for students to get on target pace, work on missing assignments, or continue pacing forward in our current unit.
ELA:
We will focus on RI.6.6 and identifying the author’s perspective. This standard challenges students to identify the viewpoint of an author towards a subject based on word choice, text structure, and examples used. We will start off with the challenge to write a paragraph about the secret object that allows others to identify the secret perspective each student is assigned. Through this experience of determining how to make their perspective clear, students will be able to relate to authors’ choices in our anchor texts. Additionally, students will use hexagonal thinking to identify central ideas and key details. Finally, we will work on annotations as we complete a close read of a poem related to our unit on modern technology as we ask how modernization impacts the natural world.
Science: We have been learning content in Science the last two weeks that is out of this world! Next week, we will be wrapping up our study of space exploration with students completing an informational poster on a current event in space exploration or the aerospace field which they will present in small groups(6.E.1.3). Students will also be taking a summative assessment on all three standards 6.E.1.1-6.E.1.3. Finally, we will begin our next Earth Science standard set that will focus on the structure of our Earth and its geographic features.
Math: We are continuing with Topic 4 this week. Topic 4 is focused on representing and solving equations and inequalities. Our essential question for this topic is, what procedures can be used to write and solve equations and inequalities. We will have our mid topic assessment. We will have a mid topic assessment on standards EE.4, EE. 5, EE. 6 and EE. 7. Our focus standard for the week is 6.EE.8.
Also, Monday is Pi Day! In celebration of Pi Day, I am having a competition to see who can remember the most numbers in Pi!
Year 2 / 7th Grade
Please learn more about the upcoming field trip by clicking on this link.
Math: We've been delving into algebraic expressions. Evaluating, simplifying, using the distributive property and learning to factor. We are taking quizzes on each section. Next week, we will be finishing expressions with applications. Then, we will be learning equations and inequalities.
Social Studies: We are highlighting women who changed the world this month as March is Women's History Month. We have just finished the “Industrial Revolution,” and boy, did that change everything! Kings and queens are not enough to lead people in this mew, quickly moving world. New forms of governments and larger struggles are coming! We will look at increasing Imperialism and forms of government.
Year 3 / 8th Grade
ELA 8
We are working through unit 3 and writing solid summaries, great ACE responses, and citing the best possible textual evidence to support inferences. We are continuing to work out the kinks as we become more independent in the process!
English 1
We are continuing through Night and I am immensely impressed by our Pioneers. As we wrap up this unit, I can only imagine the amazing work they will continue to pour out onto paper!
Science: all units have been introduced! As we wrap up 8th grade content, we begin full force interventions and test preparations! I am so excited about the good work these kids are doing in science!
Social Studies:
Students will assess on our 8.H.2 unit on Monday, 3/11. As a reflection of the work within our current unit, we decided that an extension for assessment would benefit the overall understanding of our current standard. Next week, we are looking forward to exploring the concepts of culture and behavior throughout American History!
Math 1:
Students have started a new unit on Exponential Functions this week. Our focus this week was on identifying patterns in number sequences to determine if a sequence is arithmetic or geometric. We also learned how to write the recursive and explicit formulas for a geometric sequence. They’re doing great!
Math 8:
Students assessed on linear functions early this week and started a new unit on scatter plots. Students are learning how scatter plots are used to determine if there is a correlation between two variables. There was a strong focus on vocabulary this week. They’re doing great!
Enhancements
Theatre Arts: Students will dive into their first performance unit next week! At the end of this unit, students will be able to perform a rehearsed, scripted short scene for their peers.
If your child is placed in Theatre Arts for Q4, please add yourself to their grade level’s Remind group! The Remind App allows teachers & families to communicate easily! I will send out announcements through the Remind App frequently & will use the platform to communicate with individual families as well!
21st Century Skills:
Students will finish their All About Me project next week!
Students are demonstrating their knowledge of MLA formatting and their skills with using applications such as Google Docs and Google Slides! They’ll finish typing a Letter of Introduction to Ms. Collingwood and will work in Google Slides to create a “Map of My Life.” Students will be introduced to the 21st Century Skills Standards and our focus for each unit: Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Creativity.
CTE: All students are presenting themselves in their All About Me presentation. We will be wrapping up presentations and moving into:
8th - Understanding different types of Business structures
7th - Processing Advanced Documents
6th - Learning the keyboard/typing skills
Clubs
Drama Club: The next afterschool rehearsal for the performers in Alice In Wonderland will be on March 18th from 4PM-6PM. If your student is a part of drama club, please use this link to join IASC Drama Club’s Remind App Group!
