One Body in Christ: Our Spiritual Theme
Spiritual Reflection
By Sheila O’Callaghan
All over the country children have returned to school. Have you noticed the many changes in St. Ann School? During the summer while you were enjoying that “little slice of heaven”, many people have been busy making St. Ann School beautiful. Have you noticed things that have been done to make you happy to be here?
There are many people who love you. They have worked hard so that you and your friends have a good school year. Those people deserve your thanks. Someone else deserves your thanks, and that is God. God has provided the beautiful month of September for all of us. The weather is good. The land is beautiful. It is a good month for making new friends and giving thanks. It is good to give thanks and praise to God for all the love poured out on us and for all the good days to come.
The first Mass of the school year will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 13. It is also the feast of St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. He was a famous bishop and teacher. His name means “golden mouth” because he gave such beautiful speeches.
On September 14, we celebrate the Triumph of the Cross. The cross is the symbol for the way Jesus defeated sin, hatred and death.
We remember and celebrate Mary under the title Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. That is a title for Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary was sorrowful to see Jesus carrying a cross. She followed Jesus to Calvary. She stayed by her son until he died. Mary feels the pain of all her children. She wants us to have love and compassion for all who suffer.
Once again, you have a new school year to be thankful, be kind to others and help new students to feel welcome and happy at St. Ann School.
Please pray for Fr. Mink, Fr. Jasper’s mom and all the sick of our parish. Our Armed Forces and First Responders need our prayers. Please pray for them.
God of love we place in your loving arms the thousands of innocent lives that were lost on that unforgettable morning of September 11, 2001. We also remember the courage of the countless men and women who put their lives at risk in order to rescue, alleviate and bring solace to the afflicted. Help us to continue to work for a world free from every form of hatred, violence and ignorance. May terrorism -- in all its forms -- disappear from the face of the earth.
Amen.
